Hi,It's been a while. My 05 likes to cut out occasionaly if I accelerate hard in 2nd gear ,can't duplicate all the time but it does happen. Iv'e owned it since new and it's had the recalls done and it ain't a ticker. I DID do a fourm search on this problem (which I sorta've recall) Any help would be appreciated!!!!

Does the motor die completely? Or does it feel like it just dies for a millisecond while accelerating?

A slipping 2nd gear transmission dog feels JUST like the motor is cutting out and usually occurs during HARD 2nd gear acceleration. It feels like the motor dies for just a fraction of a second, then continues accelerating. That's MY experience with the onset of tranny problems. The first FJR I ever rode had bad 2nd gear dogs and would feel like the motor died momentarily under hard acceleration. Back off the loud handle and the bike would accelerate normally, albeit more slowly.

HERE is a link describing what I'm writing about.

If the problem persists after changing plugs; checking battery condition, battery connections and voltage might be a good choice. It's not likely that a weak battery could drain the stator output enough at high RPM to be a problem, but it is possible. A loose battery connection will wreak havoc with the Rectifier/Regulator and cause some serious voltage fluctuations.

2nd gear has that special mix of RPM and vibration that tends to make ignition systems act up if everything isn't tight.

I would spend some time near red-line in 1st, 2nd and 3rd before moving into Howie's realm. Then if 2nd gear is the only place it occurs, RadioHowie feels your pain.

I've heard that these gen I's are SO FAST that you are probably just out accelearting the gas in the tank....takes a couple microseconds for it to catch up to you......... :dribble: :dribble: :dribble:

I'm with 'Howie on this one, it sure sounds like the dogs are forked. This is what it feels like when the shift forks get tweaked and the gear dogs pop out. When the problem is in its early stages it will only pop out of gear under hard acceleration and feel just like the engine misfired.

Perhaps a more detailed explanation of exactly how it 'cuts out' would help. If it is just momentary, as Howie said, it soulds like the transmission issue. If it completely dies and refuses to continue then it may be an ignition switch or some other electrical problem. If it is somewhere in between, where the engine completely dies and then restarts itself from the momentum then it could be fuel or electrical.

It's the "second gear" part that get me. If it cuts out in any other gear even sometimes then I would opt for another cause, but second gear only is a pretty damning symptom. We do need confirmation that the symptom is in second gear only.

GREAT! Just what I Wanted to hear  .Thanks for the great responses. I really hope It isn't the dogs, if it is..... maybe time to move on to a new one

I'm also with Howie on this one. This is exactly the symptoms I experienced with mine in the early stages of transmission problems. Mine did this intermittently for a year or so and got progressively worst. Eventually it ended with losing 4th gear and having to baby 2nd. We had the bike in Europe last summer and I had been pushing it really hard through the Alps and dolomite. We got as far as Tuscany and it would not drive in 4th and 2nd would jump out and in with anything over light acceleration. I babied it the last couple thousand miles of our trip and shipped it home. Instead of fixing it I just recently installed a younger motor bought on Ebay. The first motor went 116,000 miles and I really beat on it. I'm now ready for this years EOM with the new motor in. It would have been much more expensive to fix the transmission and I still would have had a motor with close to 120k miles. The Ebay motor has less than 20,000 and cost slightly more than $800 with shipping and a couple weeks of my time on installation and rebuilding most everything else on the bike while stripped down.

If it works out like mine did you have some time to form a plan to address the issue. Hope we're wrong about your symptoms. Good luck with yours.
