05' Do I really need a new fuel pump?

I missed this post as I haven't been here in a couple of days. I just went through this same thing on my bike. the o-ring had hardened and any movement caused it to seep fuel. My o-ring had hardened to the point that the sides of it had taken on the shape of the space it was in (square). I got a couple of o-rings from a kit that believe it or not was at harbor freight.

When you re-assemble dont make the same mistake I did. The high pressure line follows up into the pump half of the whole unit. fish out the o-ring from that and the plastic follower behind it. Put them on the bottom half and then slide the 2 back together. I took some pics but have been too lazy to post them (don't have a posting site)...

Oh and just an FYI, I used a dental pick to pull apart the 'fingers' that hold that fitting in. Seemed to work quite well.

Josh, the OP says his leak is on the return fitting the the pump, not the output fitting like in your situation.

Look at the pictures I linked in Post #4 and you'll see the difference.

Thanks Josh, I saw that o-ring, but no follower, I'll check it when I get home tonight.

The advice from JoshHefnerX is still valid though. The "plastic follower", as he describes it, can separate during disassembly. It's a good idea to make sure it's back where it belongs before reassembly.

My original problem w/ the fuel pump was the return fitting leaking. The high-pressure fitting problem was a 'gotcha' from not getting the pump back together back right.

Well the pump went back together and back in the tank easy enough, but.... There had to be a but. Now the seal where the pump mounts to the tank leaks. I guess I should have replaced it while I was in there. Maybe I pinched it on my first hurried attempt to put it together. Either way it's not going to seal now. Hopefully I can get one by this weekend. I want to ride already.

Dude...you got a bottom flange for a Gen I fuel pump? Do tell the story....

Just have a fuel pump assembly, metal mounting ring went with the tank. I can't imagine having a fuel pump in pieces, no resale value there?

I got the tank o-ring today. put it all back together during lunch. Then went for a test ride. It seems to be holding. Thanks for all the help, especially RadioHowie and Joe2lmaker.
