I needed to adjust my throttle cable at the handlebar on my used 05 FJR with ABS after putting about 200 miles on it after purchase at 1650 miles. The throttle adjustment is a piece of cake at the right handlebar.

I started out with an eighth of an inch before adjusting it the first time, now after a month and two more adjustments later I am at one third of an inch. Is the throttle cable naturally stretching, and from my perspective quite a lot ??? I know I must be getting to the end of the adjustment on the cable end. How much adjustment is there to be had ??? I have had other bikes and never had to adjust it so often. When I make the adjustment, the nut (No, not me) is tight so I know it is not coming loose.

I don't practice wrist curls on the bike, rarely use WOT and am smooth and gentle with it. Is my trusty bike trying to tell me something ??? Like backoff, no rida-for-you-today !!!

Second, how many have extra pain free miles do you get when you remove the tank and disable one of the throttle return springs. I may decide to do it if there is a real benefit. I am using a throttle rocker and it does make a difference after an hour or two of riding. I can't believe Mama Yamaha would build a quality bike like the FJR and put in a cheap cheesy throttle cable. Is my bike the exception ???

Rhody, I'm no expert but I do know that cables do stretch and that's one reason there's an adjustment. If you run out of adjustment on the throttle, I'd suggest you center it and lift the tank and make any further adjustment at the other end of the cable. I think the throttle end adjuster is for making finer adjustments and the other end is for the larger adjustments.

I unwound the center spring on Maxine and I think it does make a difference. I do do wrist curls because I was starting to get carpal tunnel crap and my wrist was starting to hurt while riding. I just lifted the end off the tab and it unwound one turn and then caught again! Still plenty of return and it is a little easier on the wrist. Good luck!

I say pull the tank just for the sake of pulling the tank. It's good practice, to see how all the wires, tubes and hoses are attached, so when you hit 8K or so and want to change the plugs the job will go a lot smoother.

And when the tank is off you can see the layout of the throttle return springs, not to mention the ports and adjusting screws for the TBS.

Go ahead and release the middle spring. It'll help, even with a rocker.

I'm seeing the same cable slack on my 05 ABS, at almost the same miles as you. Has to do mostly with the curve sections and how the cable settles into a sharper curve. I've already adjusted at the engine and just adjusted again at the bar end.

Hoping it settles out soon. Don't think it's stretching, just settling the curve.

Flip dat spring off! If you're right-handed then your right hand has enough grip already. No need to make it huge!
