I have an 05 with only 5000 KM's on it.

I went to my local dealer to get some new synthetic oil for the engine and rear end.

The tech told me not to switch to synthetic until the bike had at least 10k on it.

That seems like a very long break in period.

Can anyone else advise me on this?

Basically I need a second opinion.

Thanks,

McRidin

That's non-sense.

You can switch to sythetics immediately. Most performance cars - like the Viper for instance - come from the factory with Mobil 1 synthetic in them.

I dump my oil at about 500 miles on every vehicle I own and switch to sythetic.

Did the Mobil 1 synth at around 12,000 km's and while it was great in my 600R i did not care for it in the FJR's tranny/motor, seemed great for the first 500 km's but the shifting smoothness and motor vibes felt like they deteriorated quickly after that. I went back to dyno (Rotella T) that many here suggest and found a world of difference immediately and am sill happy after 800 km's. The FJR appears to be quite hard on motor oil (breaking it down) fairly quickly and has me rethinking change out times. Maybe even just an ertra oil dump without changing the filter at half the recommened interval...

You should probably do the valve check a little early on that engine since you waited sooo long to switch to synthetic. It's recommended at 26K miles. Not sure how many km's that is, I don't have a tape measure handy.

Good luck with the switch, I hope everything goes smooth.

I tried synthetic once, but thought that all natural boobs just felt better to me.

Here's a question for ya..................

Exactly WHY are you switching to synthetic? I would like to know EXACTLY, what benefits do you expect to derive from synthetic use over conventional oil?

"But it goes to eleven....."

Maybe he wants to run all day long in the summer desert heat at 130 or so, and is afraid the oil will heat up too much...

Or, he wants to go farther between oil changes, or something in between, like "what's it to ya?"

Hey, it was Friday.

Plus, I absolutely luuuuve to hear about all the magical and mystical properties associated with synthetic oil.

So bugger off. And tell me what freakin numbers are left!!! :p

Dude, time to put down the bottle.

I ain't never had a ticker. Dirty Ol Whore is a noisy bitch, but she still has her original top end. Though it sags a bit these days. :p

Here's a serious answer to a "timeless question." I am reluctant to add $.02 to a thread like this, but here goes.

No advantage to going to a synthetic. If you insist on going to a synthetic, BMW specifically says don't go to a synthetic until 12,000 miles (about 20,000 km).

My Moto Guzzi Norge started with synthetic (oddball 10W60 4T Agip full synthetic). I never had an engine with so much ring blow by after 3000 miles, and I would NEVER start with a synthetic on a motorcycle again, even if some dumbass company, like MotoGuzzi, recommended it. Note that it is almost impossible to get their spec'ed oil in the USA.

As for the final drive, I'm starting to wonder if Yamaha is using whale oil. They just give a part number with no specs, the oil costs a fortune, the Japanese are into whaling, and it smells like fish oil. Hmmmmm...fish oil.....
