Can someone fill me in on the latest issue surrounding a top box and the subframe on the 06. I wasnt aware of a problem. Its listed in Iggy's posted comparison matrix.

thanx

The trunk recall entails adding a metal plate to the bottom of the trunk and replacing the mounting plate with a new plate that has reinforcement and extra support added to the lip that is next to the back of the passenger's seat. This is to prevent the bottom latch portion of the trunk bottom from breaking. AFAIK, the subframe is not a problem.

I'm not aware of any cracked sub frames that weren't as the result of overloads, tie-downs, crashes or other self inflicted abuse. The sub frame may be somewhat under braced if you are planning to strap a lot of weight to it.

:)

FWIW, there have been several members who have had problems with cracked subframes; here is one thread:
Cracked Subframe thread
Well, let's be a bit more accurate here.... these are subframes members have cracked by either overloading, or from an accident. IOW, they did it to themselves.... the FJR subframe does not inherently have any "issues", be it 2006 or any other model year. If someone has posted that their subframe got cracked in normal use, I have yet to see it.

For example, in Garauld's citied thread above, IIRC this cracked subframe was the result of a mishap... not just some discovery of a cracked subframe.

Exactly. I'm one of those that loaded the frame way over specifications and had to repair it. Linky to my repair and improve project including pictures. No way was it a warranty issue.

That said, since I had the subframe off I had it welded and beefed up so I can carry a larger load than original specification.

Not trying to steal the thread but when you all are talking about the sub-frame, are you talking about the rack that the topbox mounts to. Secondly, if going with a Givi topbox, should one just buy the Givi topbox mounting rack rather than mount to the FJR's rack.

Yamaha refers to the mounting plate for the top box as the subframe? Guess they think it sounds fancy.

No, they don't. The subframe is the unit that carries the seat, taillights, sidebags, and the rear rack, to which you would add your top box.

Two different crack problems are being thrown around here. The overloaded or unbraced top cases led to cracks at the rear bulkhead of the subframe. The Yamaha recall is for cracks in the actual mount plate which is attached to the rack at the rear of the bike.

Lets say that MY Dealer calls the rear rack mount the subframe then. Regardless they have no clue as to what there doing and I shouldn't pass on anything they say. By the way, that would be Town and Country (RideNow) in Chandler AZ Town and Country Reviews

Sorry, my dealer called the mounting bracket the sub frame, even pointed out the thing to show me how they replaced the "Sub Frame" I thought that sounded odd. Oh well, Town and Country in Chandler, AZ has got to be the worst dealership in the history of Motorsports anyway, stay clear! TOWN AND COUNTRY (RIDE NOW) REVIEWS
