I had the dealer install a pair of the factory heated grips at an outrageous price and when I picked the bike up he told me that there was a problem installing them because although the part indicated they were for an '06 the wiring harness attached to the grips did not match the harness on the bike. Now I am riding around with a set of heated grips that are not attached electrically until they hear back from Yamaha. Now my question is does this sound like a line of ******** from the dealer or have others experienced the same thing? I'm sure along with an answer will come a dogpile of comments about paying to much for OEM heated grips but go ahead.....I'm prepared...

I knew that I wanted the factory heated grips & informed my dealer to order them before my bike was even in. That way when the bike was being prepped they did the install.

They came out fine, & he was decent enough to discount the price & not charge for the install. (2 hours labor).

I think you need to have a talk with them.

Smoke a tire.....It's cancer free!

War Machine,

Where are you located? I just got off the phone with Yamaha corporate and they told me the '06 heated grips haven't been released yet even though they have a part number for them. He told me that if anyone with an '06 has the grips installed the dealer would have had to cut and splice '05 grips because the factory harness wouldn't match up. Maybe that will work but if I'm paying for factory grips, I want the factory harness, especially with a dealership that keeps my bike for 4 days to do a 600 mile service.

Has anyone else looked at these and thought they were clumsy and poorly executed?

The Yamaha heated grips for '03-'05 are universal grips. Could go on a snowmobile, V-Max or FJR. The grip kit comes with the heated grips and heat controller. Next items that go into the kit are an application specific mounting bracket for the heat controller followed by a hand full of electrical confabulators that plug into the electrical harness in various places. The instructions in Japanese were better than the ones in English. <_< It is possible to install the grips without cutting or splicing but ya gotta look in the wrapped harness for some of the connectors.

After replacing the first defective controller, my grips have worked very well for the last two years. Living in the land of ice and snow 6 months a year I have really gotten to like heated grips and will put them on all future motorcycles.

I too ordered the factory grips... and I'm still waiting even tho the bike was delivered last month. The dealer is telling me they won't have them til the fall. Something about the part number being wrong and they don't fit or the wiring is wrong.

Axeman... glad to know I'm not alone with ordering these.

Same exact story. You would think that now that the AE is out with heated grips being standard they would have them available....not that I need them when its 90 degrees out...

I also ordered the heated grips from the dealer and they installed them. said it took 6 hours but they would only charge me for 3 and the install looked like ****. After going back and forth and then seeing the service mgr who agreed they looked terrible and then checking with parts to find out that the 06 grips are not available yet we are still going round and round on what to do. I told them I want the 06 kit and not the 03-05 kit especially since it cost me $500. Will keep everyone posted on the outcome. by the way i also ordered sliders and they did not put them on because they were not available yet. Everett

Your dealer probably chopped the wiring harness to install the '05 grips. I'd pull the right side panels and see what he's done. You may no longer be able to install the grips without doing something about the harness.

The '06 grips are speed sensitive. Previous (and the copycat) models were/are not.

Latest update on my heated grips. The dealer finally acknowledged, actually got caught in it, that the grips were for the earlier models and has agreed to remove them and refund my $500. plus tax. Unfortunately it was not accomplished as graciously nor quickly as I would have liked. Hopefully my refund check will be in the mail monday. The grips were not wired into the harness.
