Just talked to the mechanic at the dealer. He reports that he talked to a Yamaha engineer who indicated that if there was an electrical fault with the ABS system it would just not function, and the brakes would be regular brakes, until the ABS system sensed no fault condition again. He thought a dashboard light would come on also. Is there an ABS failure light on the dashboard?
Can someone check the shop manual and tell me if there is either an idiot light on the dash or a fault code to read if the ABS does show a fault?
There's a big red light that says "ABS" that comes on when you turn the key on. It's the one above the green "N". If there is a malfunction found by the ABS diagnosis, then the light will come on.

Per the manual "If the ABS warning light comes on while riding, a malfunction has been detected in the ABS. The ABS hydraulic control will not be performed (emphasis added). The ABS will have recourse to manual braking if this occurs." "If the ABS warning light flashes while riding, there is no problem with the function of the ABS. However the ABS ECU input has unstable factors."

Thanks eg. I did not notice if the light came on when the brakes came on, I'll have to watch for that if it happens again.

Picked up the bike from the dealer Monday. The mechanic mostly reiterated what he told me on the phone. Only issue I have is the front brake lever travels a little bit more before the brakes apply. I will check the M/C level tomorrow.

Daughter came back from China for a visit and her sisters came to visit her and so Sally and I have been entertaining kids and grandkids all week.

Aside:

As I was moving the bike to the door to leave the dealer I mentioned to the mechanic that the valve shims were due in 2,000 miles and that they could have done them last week and saved me a trip. I asked if he in fact knew how to check and calculate replacement shims..... Guess what the answer was..... :(

Guess that is one maintenance item I will be doing myself. I am perfectly capable of doing it but I have been maintaining my own bikes for many years and I don't want to work on bikes any more. I wanna RIDE!
