1.3 Gallon Gas Tank Reserve

Interesting. I would not of thought that would be the case. I think I'v put 6.1 gallons in a few times and I was running around 260 miles on the tank. That's good enough for me.

I'm not punching any holes in my filler neck that's for sure. The bike has a terrific range as it is and I got 44.9 MPG (first time I ever took the time to actually do the math and figure it out) on my last tank and for a 4cyl 1300cc 600+lb bike I think that's pretty darn good!

I have sat at the pump after it kicked off, and the filelr neck was full, let the tank burp multiple times, and actually put over a half gallon more in it. Took forever. With my vents, I can now fill it to teh same level or more without taking half an hour to do it.

I am sticking with my mod. No more long fuel stops trickling fuel into the tank.

That's cool, I'm not knocking your mod per se. Just not one I'm interested in messing with myself. But if it works for you and you like it that's all that really matters.

Half hour? You must be retarded. I can be an OCD anal-retentive type just like Fred, and fueling is one of those times. I'm a burper and proud of it. But it only takes me a minute, maybe two, to get that last .2-.3 gallon in. I know I've got issues. Don't know what you got, but it ain't looking good!

I was making a point about wasting time burping the tank. What I have ais a bike just like yours that fills up without having to be burped multiple times.

Thanks and you are right. My bike, my mods. Seems to work out better for me as it is now. Thats really ALL that matters. Call it OCD. Call it boredom. I made the mod, Its done. For those that cant get over it, I really could give a damn less.

I am a tank burping fool myself. I almost always fill on the center stand but have been loaded with enough weight and late in the day were I can not get the pig to sit on the Center stand. Then I will fill on the side stand and it does take more time. Also depends on how the pump handle cut off works. If it allows me a trickle it is no issue, but man some are just a bitch to regulate.

And WTF how many pages on a reserve question?

I mean you got a gallon and a half when the light kicks on and if you get 40 MPG you got 60 miles if you are brave and don't mind pushing.

Me I get a light at around 210-215 or so. So I will never try to push more then my MAX BEST MPG NUMBER and go as if I got ONE gallon or about 35-40 miles before I am close to pushing. I never depend on that last half gallon.

Some guys hit the Lottery, me, I would end up pushing :huh:

I've watched the Skooter routine several times, I believe it surpasses simple OCD. It is something more like a zen trance on top of OCD. Even after he has put 6.9 gallons in the 6.6 gallon tank and the pump won't pump any more he still goes CLICK SHAKE CLICK SHAKE CLICK SHAKE. I wonder how he ever makes it out of the men's room...

I don't think it is so much about a few holes in the filler neck, it's about why someone would even feel that it is necessary. BTW, you are not a trail blazer, others before you have done and posted a similar solution. And, when they posted about it got roughly the same responses. Glad you Got 'er Done, now it's time to relax and enjoy your ride.

Isaac is almost past us, So I might be able to dig it out of the corner of the shop to ride tomorrow. Hated driving the truck to work for 2 days. Not a bad truck, But I miss riding.

After commuting 75 miles round trip on my 06 Gen II for a couple years now, I FINALLY get around to searching out this thread... I usually fill up after every other commute because my reserve countdown would come on at about the 190-200 mile mark and I wasn't sure about another 25 miles or so required to go three days between fill-ups. Last fill I put in 3.5 gallons at 150 miles (about 42 MPG), so based on this thread I should have about 1 gallon left at 225.

That a whole lot of pit stops that I could've saved over two years. Don't want to think about it...

Pretty good bump of a zombie thread, but thanks for searching! When the display flashes, it used to get me motivated to a fuel stop, but any more, I'm looking for 40 miles into reserve before I get concerned at all.

20 miles into reserve in the middle of nowhere New Mexico with your GPS telling you the nearest gas station is 25 miles behind you will bring you to cold sweats.

Thank goodness the GPS didn't know about the gas station 3 miles further down the road and thank goodness I'm more stubborn than I am smart.

I have convinced myself twice I was going to be out of gas and stranded, never been able to get more than about 5.5 gallons in it. I've never had the nerve to find out if you really could eak out 100 miles on the count up odo (Gen II). I've pushed it over 50 miles a couple of times. When you're out in the boonies doing that, little things like a breeze or a slight uphill cause major stress.

How far has anyone ever gone on the count-up w/o running out?

I was considering this mod and came to the same concern. If the fuel tank was removed and rinsed of any fuel and fumes maybe. But I'm not going to do all of that work.

It will vary a bit from bike to bike, conditions that day, etc...... take a 1 litre bottle of gas with you and run it out. Then you'll know. I went exactly 102 kms (60 miles) got home, and when I put it on the side stand, it died. Close enough for me.
