Route explanation & problems encountered:
2May09 departed Angleton TX north bound on HWY 288, took 610 Loop around west side of Houston to I-10, where we proceeded west bound to Van Horn TX.
2May09 at approximately 1725 hrs, Blake’s bike had problems near the intersection of I-10 & I-20, near MM185. His negative battery terminal cable had come loose.
2May09 at approximately 1830 hrs, Blake’s bike ran out of fuel as we were existing I-10 in Van Horn TX. Some riders had already stopped at Love’s fuel stop; Blake pushed his bike to the Exxon, which was nearer than Love’s.
2May09 departed Van Horn TX east bound on I-10, then took I-20 northeast bound with a goal of Sweetwater TX, via Odessa, Seminole on HWY 385 & Snyder on HWY 180.
We took NW Loop 338 from I-20 around west side of Odessa to HWY 385. Stopped on side of road at Intersection of NW 338 & HWY 385 to put on our rain gear because a cold front was pushing through and we saw an impressive lightening show in the direction we wanted to go, which was north bound on HWY 385 towards Seminole TX, then HWY 180 towards Sweetwater via Snyder TX.
Went south bound a mile or two on HWY 385 to find a gas station (2146 hrs) and discuss our route, which was not looking good because of the storm to our north.
Continued north bound on HWY 385, but stopped 18 miles short of Seminole on the side of the road because the storm had increased in magnitude. NOAA was reporting 60 mph wind gusts, dime to penny sized hail, and possible flash flooding. Remembering all our reading about safety on Iron Butt’s web site, we discussed our options for a few minutes, and then we retreated south along HWY 385 to Andrews where we stopped (2055 hrs) to continue our route discussion and obtain a time stamp with gas tank top-off. Do not believe Bobby & Glenn topped off there fuel tanks here; can not remember.
Departed Andrews TX via HWY 385 south bound to just north of Odessa TX where we took NE Loop 338 around the east side of Odessa to I-20, then proceeded along I-20 east bound towards Sweetwater TX. Temperature was dropping, rain & lightening all around us, so we stopped in Colorado City for shelter and rest since we had completed a little over 1,000 miles to qualify for SS100.
It rained all night, and temps dropped from the high 80’s to low 40’s. Bobby, Blake and Glen departed Colorado City at 0630. Ken & Chip slept in & departed Colorado City at 0800.
Ken & Chip proceeded east bound along I-20 to Abilene TX, and then proceeded south along HWY 36 (to get in front of the cold front & storms) to Brenham TX.
From Brenham we took 290 to Houston, where we paid our way through 3 toll booths (receipts attached), and went around the west side of Houston on Beltway 8 to HWY 288.
Took HWY 288 south to Surfside Beach TX, where my GPS read 1,515 miles. Believing the mileage was too close for comfort, we proceed another 21 miles north on HWY 288 to Angleton, where my GPS read 1536.6 total miles traveled.
