Having reached 600 miles on my 2 week old FJR I completed the first service. I know 2 weeks and only 600 miles is pitiful but I was down for over a week with a bad back.

I was a bit concerned that with the oil filter sideways above the fairing that it was going to be a really messy oil change. I removed the bolt in the fairing and slid a piece of aluminum foil behind it to minimize cleanup. That actually worked very well. I was relieved to find that my large stock of Honda crush washers fit the FJR's oil drain bolt and differential drain and fill bolts. I can buy these much cheaper than the Yamaha washers. Installed a motorcycle specific synthetic oil and a Wix filter.

The gear lube drain and fill is easy as can be. You can fill directly from the bottle, no hose or pump needed.

Overall a very easy bike for the do it yourself oil & gear lube changes.

Another great thing about the FJR is just how easy it is to work on. The deeper you dig, most any maintenance item is pretty painless to complete. That, combined with the forum resource makes for many $$$ saved!

Have fun with the new scoot!!

Has anyone checked the balance on the throttle slides on the 2013 model yet? If so, is there a problem getting at the air screw? Yamaha implies that you need their special tool for the project.

Only thing I hear people complain about are the headlight bulbs.......especially if you have large hands!!

Include in that complaint a tail light bulb. Not as tight as the headlights but a bitch to get seated sometimes. I learned this in a hot AdvanceAuto parking lot 545 miles from home.

I did my first TBS a few weeks ago. No problems, very similar to the Gen II. In fact, the #2 was easier to get to than on the Gen II.

Can't disagree on that one! There's some technique involved but it's still a PITA...

My understanding is you shouldn't use synthetic oil until at least 1500 miles. Not sure how much it matters. There's a video circulating on here about new engine break in, and synthetic in a new engine was a big no-no

From the old oil-head beemer days... we ran dino until the bike stopped burning oil. Of my two oil-heads this was somewhere between 5k and 8k. It was important then. These modern day bikes like the FJR... if it's burning oil even prior to the 600 mile service I'm thinking there's something wrong. :)

But I still don't switch to synth until the first major oil change around 7K.

I switched to synth oil at 600 miles. 70k+ miles and going strong....
Same here only 96k+ miles and going strong on Shell Rotella T 5w40 Synthetic plus eight ounces of STP oil treatment.
I use Valvoline Synthetic, 10w40 in cooler temps and 20w50 for our steamy southeastern summers. I don't use any additives.
