My local dealer offers the following service special for $134.

Check tire wear and air pressure

Inspect electrical system

Inspect/adjust/lube all cables

Inspect and adjust steering

Service air filter

Inspect fuel hose and fittings

Adjust and lube brake levers

Check nuts and bolts

Inspect charging system and battery voltage

Clean battery terminals

Inspect and adjust valves

Check brake pad wear

Complete safety inspection

Guaranteed 24 hour turnaround

That's a lot of stuff for $134, including inspection and adjustment of engine valves.

As long as you totally trust this dealer and his skills. Adjustment of the valves is a time consuming project. If so, where can this deal be had?

Some language that would concern me.

Inspect and adjust steering
How does one adjust steering? One can retorque the head bearings, but I don't think there's adjustement.

Inspect oil cooler and lines
I didn't think the FJR has an oil cooler......and if it does I've never checked mine

Inspect charging system and battery voltage
Not going to show much. Even a sulfated battery will show proper voltage....it just won't hang if a load is applied.

Inspect and adjust valves
Very troublesome.....seems too good to be true. Just to check the valves is a 2+ hour job. IF they need adjustment it's usually about double. Sure they don't mean something like tire valve stems or something?

It almost sounds like this maintenance is for a relatively easy air-cooled bike.

This dealer is located in middle Tennessee. It's a highly reputable dealer which has been around for many, many years. It's a multi-brand dealer -- Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, etc.

They recently moved to a new location in town into a brand new facility.

The deal may be their attempt at attracting people to their new location. They've had several '$10 off Anything in the Store' offers in recent months. I've bought a few FJR oil filters with these deals.

They repaired an FJR ticker late last fall for someone in the local area. They treated me well when they replaced my TPS.

I did/do all this stuff myself on my FJR -- checking the valves was an adventure.

So, I won't be jumping on the deal.

I bought my FJR at D&H in Alabama.

Some of the items may be specific to ATV's. But this deal applies to multi-cylinder bikes as well.

During the winter months the shop may not be so busy.

I'm thinking that the $134 probably has or should have an astericks next to it, i.e. $134* I'm thinking that asterick would exclude some type bikes for valve inspection, e.g. FJR. A dealer would be hard pressed to make any money just doing the valve check (not even an adjustment) for $134.

My guess is that they "check" the valves by listening to it idle to see if it ticks...... Hard to imagine they are they going to undertake the liability of pulling the cam cover and actually checking valve lash on an FJR for $134 along with all the other stuff.

Most of the list reads like a real come on as there are a lot of words and most of the stuff is relatively easy to "check" at a glance. Like is the charging light on? Charging system OK. Nuts and bolts...??? Quick glance at the brake pad thickness. Pretty simple, general stuff.

Not that it isn't a decent deal or that the dealer isn't reputable. Just that they are really making it sound like more than it really is. And likely looking for stuff to add to the job...i.e... "your tires are really worn...." etc.

BTW....the FJR has an oil cooler. It is an oil-to-coolant cooler. One of the hoses of the cooling system routes thru the engine oil heat exchanger for cooling the oil.

I talked to the service manager. He said this deal is a steal for an FJR. They typically charge $200+ just for valve clearance inspection/adjustment.

On the same advertisement they offer an oil and filter change for $23.70.

This dealer has been in business for 21 years in this town.

They can likely do this deal because most of its labor. Materials are oils, oil filter, brake fluid, and spark plugs.

May be a dead time for them and all their technicians aren't busy. Any shop revenue is better than none as long as all material costs are covered. They have several technicians at this shop.
