Is Bryant Gumbel the worst play by play guy, or is it just me?

He has the ability to make a great game boring to watch. I still cant figure out how this game is making history though?? Its been done before, has it not? And the Dolphins went all the way...sooo?

+1 on Gumball. That was a tough game to listen to. The NFL Network seems to pretty much suck.

Giants got a gift with that bogus personal foul "celebrating" call. That ref was ready to throw the flag before the catch was finished. He actually had his hand on the flag as the ball was still in the air. Backing the kick-off up 15 wasn't totally responsible for allowing NY to return the kick, but it sure the hell made it easier.

Later Brady loops a nice pass to Moss in the end zone and hits the snoozing Giant defender on the back of the head. That should have been 7. That's 14 points right there.

In the first half the Pats were trying to stop the run (they did) and beat the pass on coverage (they didn't). Burris is a better receiver than Hobbs is a defender. It was only a matter of time before they figured out that they were going to have to put some pressure on Manning. Once they did, he looked like a little girl running away from them in the back field. That was the Eli we have seen all season. Even managed to throw a nice interception once the game was on the line.

I don't think anyone expected the Giants to come out and contest the game that aggressively. Why on earth did they? If you ask me it was just stupidity on the part of the coaches. They have a playoff game (that actually matters to the franchise) to play next week while the Patriots can watch TV. What did they care if the Pats went undefeated in the regular season? What happens if they get knocked out in the first round now?

The "record" is that this was the first 16 game undefeated regular season. Back when the Dolphins went undefeated is was a 14 game season. If the Patriots don't make it to, and win, the Stupor Bowl the record will be meaningless. That was about the only thing Collingsworth got right last night. The biggest risk to that happening will be whether the league (via the refs) wants to hand it to Indy again, like last year. At least this time they'll have to do it at Foxboro.

[Edit] - forgot the "other" records:

PATRIOTS SET NFL ALL-TIME SINGLE-SEASON SCORING RECORD

PATRIOTS SET ALL-TIME NFL RECORD FOR CONSECUTIVE REGULAR-SEASON WINS

TOM BRADY SETS NFL ALL-TIME SINGLE-SEASON TOUCHDOWN PASS RECORD

RANDY MOSS SETS NFL ALL-TIME SINGLE-SEASON TOUCHDOWN RECEPTION RECORD

TOM BRADY SETS PATRIOTS SINGLE-SEASON PASSING YARDAGE RECORD

WES WELKER SETS PATRIOTS SINGLE-SEASON RECEPTIONS RECORD

RANDY MOSS SETS PATRIOTS SINGLE-SEASON RECEIVING YARD RECORD

All I've got to say is #$!@$#%^@$#%!!!!!!!
Can't anybody play these guys four full frickin' quarters?
That is so right. The Pats are a 4(th) quarter team.

Just when other teams are giving up (and making mistakes) the Pats go in for the kill!!

That was a great game. Just found this thread, as last night I had waaaaayy too much scotch, finished off a little JD and had some beers with a buddy. But say anything you'd like. This is the best team of the new era (post free-agency). It's a great time to be from Boston/New England :D

I hope some negative sorts that posted previously will experience this great feeling sometime in the future, but I won't rain on their parade.................maybe. :p

What a time to be a Boston sports fan. Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics, BC Football.

Too bad I moved to GA 20yrs ago but wayyyy better riding conditions!

I suffered through many lousy, losing Patriots seasons and gave up wasting my time watching. I then married a GA girl from a UGA football team family and much prefer college ball but still catch the Pats when I can.

Its all about the coach, Bellicek knows how to control those egos and keep them focused on the team not themselves.

Steve

You are so right. A good example is Randy Moss, who was a problem everywhere he's been. One season with the Pats and he's a model citizen.

You raise a good point. Bellicek is a mastermind in many senses of the word.

I wonder if Bellicek has some blackmail over everyone to keep them all in check. Voyeuristic videos of Moss playing with barbie dolls or something??? :shok: Or maybe Wilfork riding a pink Vespa instead of his R1... :unknw:

And Rodney Harrison, Cory Dillion, Junior Seau, etc., etc.

While free agency and the salary cap has prevented teams from ‘buying’ championships it has led to highly skilled individuals playing for money rather than teams competing for championships. The current Patriot team is one of the few teams that players want to come join as a team member on the real chance of winning a Super Bowl and will accept less money than they might make as a big time star on another team.

Perhaps the most telling thing happened last year when Tom Brady gave back much of his salary and told the Patriot’s front office to take his money and ‘go buy me some targets’. They did, and he destroyed the rest of the NFL with them. Who else in the NFL actually gives back money to make thier team more competetive?

16-0 isn't the only record that was set.....This was the first football game that I sat through from start to finish and actually found it to be mildly entertaining!

You seem to have the best of both worlds, Steve. GA weather and an alliance to the NE sports. ;)

But seriously, being a native New Englander, I've been a Pats fan since birth, and watched them through all of those horrible losing seasons. But, I really enjoyed some of them even though they didn't make the playoffs or hit the big time. They never got any respect or attention from the media, always treated as a second tier team from the junior league, and that's part of the allure.

But I don't think that qualifies as suffering. Suffering as a fan, in my mind at least, is defined by our other illustrious team (the Red Sox, of course) who have managed to blow so many season leads, and trips to the big game, in so many different ways. But I have never stopped watching, and rooting, for them either.

As you probably already know, we die-hard New England sports fans wear our suffering as a badge of courage. We like it being the scrappy underdog that the rest of the country hates. Being the league and media darlings that the Patriots are now is a bit of new territory for us, though I did notice the announcers seemed to really want the Giants to stop the 16-0 for some reason.

Hey Fred, I don't think there are too many people in the rest of the world who refer to the Patriots as media darlings. "Evil genius" and "Pretty Boy Tom" seem to be the most common references I hear.

Evil Genius? Pretty Boy Tom? To be honest, I've never heard any announcer or media outlet use either of those terms. I hear this kind of goofy stuff from jealous fans (of other teams), but not from the media.

I'm assuming that the E.G. moniker is due to the ridiculous "taping scandal". Nobody in the media is even talking about that anymore since it is well known that every team participated in the activity, even the Jets who leveled the charges in the first place and it gave them absolutely no advantage of any kind in the game. Get over it.

"Pretty Boy" Brady? That's laughable. He has the admiration of all of the grunts on the line for being able to take a licking and keep on ticking off the yards. He has the respect and admiration of linemen throughout the league. He's definitely not a wimp. Maybe it's supposed to mean that he is too handsome? I wouldn't know, I guess you'd have to ask his supermodel girlfriend. Then again, compared to Peyton even I'm handsome.

Its called Jelousy........If Brady or Belichick went to any other team, they would sing their praises...to bad its not gonna happen. Funny how a few years ago this was "America's Team". Now with the same management and coach and many of the same players.....They are the bad boys of the NFL. What has really changed....NOTHING, except they keep winning. Why is it winners are always disliked.....

Not to hijack this thread BUT how about my Celtics? :yahoo: I've sat through so many sucky season since the Larry Bird era that I thought it would never end. And now...

Some of the ESPN sportscenter guys -- and the NFL Network analysts (aka former players) -- are fond of the E.G. moniker. They've used it for the last few years in reference to his coaching style and unrelenting rule over the league.

The same guys use the "pretty boy" to highlight Tom's squeaky clean image as a contrast to the coach's image. Sure Brady has everyone's respect, it's not a knock on his abilities. Probably more a reference to his talents, image, off-field life.... i.e. they're jealous and wish they were him. Brady even played up that image when he hosted Saturday Night Live.
