Will this size tire work on the rear? Anyone running this size on the rear without clearance problems?

Yes, it'll work just fine. Reports indicate running that size will also correct speedometer error, at least on GEN III's.

It definitely helps in regards to speedometer error, but for the total win you need a car tire! Zero speedo error and odometer error negligible also.

Yes. I've been running that size rear tire for years on my FJR.

The 190 works fine, plenty of clearance and it does help the speedo error, at least on my '07. I found all this out the hard (and expensive) way by picking up a 4" nail in my 88 mile old Michy 6. Couldn't plug it so the only available tire was of course at a Dealer 40 miles away where they happily installed a new 190 to the tune of $500. What can you do?

I've had a 190 on my '05 for most of the last 10 yrs... fits no problem, all good. However, I've been told it will affect the bike's handling in some way (mostly on FB). That may be true but I don't know what that is as the 190 has been my "normal" for a long time. Only other thing I will point out is the different wear I'm seeing between the front and back. Rear tire is worn to the edges and not quite at the wear bars. The front tire, however, is not worn anywhere near the very edge of the tread but IS worn down to the wear bars. I'm not a fast rider and I keep my pressures at ~40psi (tires are Dunlop RS 3 w/5K miles) so perhaps it's due to the weight of the FJR? I've never used GT tires and I'm not concerned about it... just something that is visually obvious right now...

That sounds more like you enjoy cornering rather than any effect of the non-standard (for an FJR) rear aspect ratio. It's not at all uncommon to have some surplus front tread -- after all, if you are going to push it to the edge, you rather have the rear give the warning before the front! Fronts tend to wear faster in corners due to the way they scuff around the curve while counter-steering. Rears tend to wear faster under acceleration, hard downshifts, etc. Sounds like you are pretty smooth on the throttle.

I have been using 190/55-17 rear tires on both GenII and my current 2014ES. It is true the speedo will be correct using this tire. I have checked the speedo against my GPS and they are dead on.

I have been using the 190/55-17 for quite awhile with no clearance problems. The speedo is closer but still a few percent higher than the GPS on my 2009.
