1st gear surging between 20 and 25 mph

Has anyone had their dealer get the OK to check their CO settings on an 06? Seems crazy to buy a PCIII when there might be a solution already built in.

I might explore this with my dealer as I also have the off idle surge.

(side note) - Took a ZX14 out for a test ride... Now that is one freakin smooth land rocket. Absolutely breath taking performance and perfect throttle response. I think 'Daddy' likes :hyper:

 
One more bit in info to add to this discussion.

The surge on my bike had gotten much worse after I did the 600 mile service. Rather, after my dealer did the 600 miles service. He had reported that he had sync'd the TBs and that the bike ran good now. Well, that is not how it really was. I decided to see if I could figure out how to bump the idle up 1 or 2 hundred RPM till I could take it back in to have it checked out.

Surprise! Lift the tank to take a look and what do I find? Two evap lines UNPLUGGED under the tank.

Well I hooked them back up and the bike now runs and idles much better. Still some slight surge that I think is not going to be fixed without a Power Commander upgrade, but much better.

The moral of the story is, make sure your local dealer “mechanic” (used as a term on derision here) was paying more attention to your bike than he was to mine.

I've am experiancing the same lean surge at light throttle that you guys are on my 06.
I talked to the Power Commander people today and found out that they don't have one for the 06 yet and don't have an eta. The guy said because it is special order, they had not gotten ahold of one to play with yet.

If anyone out there is in the Vegas area with an 06 FRJ, give them a call an offer to let them look at your bike. They may give you a unit for free.

I just went to the Power Commander website and they are showing part number 419-411 for the '06 FJR PCIII, although you can't order it yet. Me thinks they are getting close to being orderable :yahoo:

 
I have an '06 that is about 3 weeks old and has about 800 miles on it. Since I drove it off the lot the bike will surge in first gear when trying to keep a steady 20 to 25 miles per hour. Its next to impossible to maintain that speed comfortably because of it. I just got it back from the dealer from its 600 mile service and there is absolutely no change even though they supposedly checked this. I had also told them at the time that the bike stalls when applying throttle just off of idle when it is in neutral. Of course this didn't change either. Does anyone want to venture a guess as to whats causing this. Never having had an FJR before, I can't imagine that this in normal.
I have almost identical symptoms with my '06 - definitely surging or hunting in the low rpm range - somewhere around 3k. I also have the cough and die symptom. Seems to happen in this scenario - Ride the bike for awhile so it is warmed up well. Stop the bike - let sit for a short time - start up again. Bike isn't cold, but it isn't hot, either. Coughs just when you start to open the throttle. Usually starts right up, but once in awhile it coughs again. Had it do this 3 time at one intersection during the first week I had the bike. I attibuted it to learning the clutch and throttle -

since then - it has done it again - with clutch fully disengaged.

Have not done a TBS, yet and I think the bike does need it as it is a bit rough in places. have not run diagnostics on TPS, but will do that tonight. Have a tad too much freeplay in throttle and will address that tonight.

one other symptom I had - riding a couple of weeks ago through a fairly warm day - (about 90) - Rode it to a place and then cruised around a parking lot looking for someone. So bike definitely got hot. Parked the bike on side stand and left it for perhaps 1/2 to 1 hour. When I retrieved the bike and started it - it ran for ****. Very rough - like it was either starved for gas or getting too much. Felt like it was runing on 2 or 3 cyl. Reving the throttle seemed to clear its throat and progressively got better. Cleared up after maybe 5 or 6 revs - but sounded pretty bad. I would say that it sounded rich rather than lean. Didn't see any smoke or anything.

Cleared up and ran great for the trip back to hotel and then 350 miles the next day.

I would have said it was bad gas, but I had bought gas from a reputable station with lots of traffic, so the gas was most likely fresh - there was no truck delivering, so I doubt it was a stirred up storage tank.

anyway - cleared up and hasn't been back though I have noticed that after a hard ride when starting up - the bike doesn't feel like it has quite the same smoothness as normal. Also clears up quickly.

I'll address the throttle freeplay and check the tps this evening. TBS will have to wait till I dig out my carb stix (which I think I threw away when I moved) or the next service (which will be soon - currently 3200 mles)

I've had virtually identical experiences with my '06 as the ones you've described. The rough running on start-up has only happened a couple of times. Like you said, it seems to be dependent on just the wrong circumstances.

I'm hoping I can con someone in the Houston area to help me with the Throttle body synch pretty soon.

 
Most likely boiled the gas in the rail. On most FI vehicles this isn't a big deal-the pump runs,sends fuel through the regulator back to the tank,and brings in cool gas that turns things around. But with a hot load of fuel like the Feej has (even on the 06 the tank still gets warm after sitting I would imagine) it will take longer for the symptom to correct itself. Pressure in the rail helps raise the boiling point, but then the rail pressure bleeds down when sitting, and the pump doesn't know air pressure from fuel pressure when pumping up the rail, so you're probably real lean on the hot start till things equalize. Since an ultra lean mix won't light off, you will smell raw fuel coming from the pipes due to the misfiring cylinders. IMHO that is......... ;) By the way, this is one of the reasons for the hot tank syndrome on FJR's, the circulation returns heated fuel to the tank, raising the temp.
