Yep, finally did it! Got my goal of a SS1K done in 17hrs, 56 minutes and it was no sissy route. Check out Toe's post today to see what I mean, we got EVERYTHING thrown at us. Those of you who have ridden Sonora Pass know when it's wet, windy, snowy and littered with gravel from road crews running around the area, descending it got your attention. At Walker a side gust took all my strength not to drop the bike when I took it off the center stand after fueling. I waved at Toe while arriving in Bodega Bay as he was pulling out and didn't see him after that. The traffic he described was the real deal, I've done more lane "sharing" in the past few weeks than I've done in a lifetime of riding. James B, I don't know how you do it on a daily basis, I'd probably be packing heat after a few more of those commutes. The rest of the ride was cool and very windy, Hwy 166 in the dark with 30+mph cross wind gusts and a close encounter with an owl kept my attention as did the trucks on I-5 on the way home. Rolled into Merced at 01:15 this morning with 1022.4 miles on the clock. Great first experience at LD riding two Sierra Mtn. passes, a trip to the coast, Bay area traffic at rush hour, high speed sweepers in the dark foothills west of Bakersfield, searching for gas at midnight, (note to self: fuel consumption is higher when fighting strong winds, my new rule of thumb is reduce range by 20%) all made for a gratifying SS1K. Toe's got a tough route for a BBG if anyone is interested. Thanks Toe for the route planning, as I said, it aint' no sissy route. P.S. Forgot to thank Rick Mayer for the excellent seat, didn't even THINK of shifting around on the seat until around the 600 mile mark, thanks Rick!
