There's no difference. Yamaha used to sell us bikes that were the previous model year for the rest of the world, calling EU '04 spec bike an US '05 spec, but delivering them in the year before their model designation. They transitioned to everyone getting the same year spec/model at the end of '05. Possibly due to the Gen II bikes coming out in '06 or the end of the PDP system.

'04/'05 bikes are identical except for the color, fwiw. It's possible some are referring to the last batch of Gen Is in '05 as the 5.5 bikes, but that's really not describing anything different. Look at the build date on your VIN plate to see when your bike was built.

For example, my '04, delivered in July of '03 has a build date of 6/03 and was ordered in Oct. '02. It's the same model spec as EU '03 bikes. Our '03 bikes, (the first US model), were '02 spec, delivered in '02. Clear as mud. Now an '09 is the same bike everywhere.

There was a second run of '05s sold in the US. I bought mine in July of '05. It was likely just Yamaha using up the parts before they started on the slightly different gen 2 models. The only differences I know of between the early '05's and the late ones is that the later ones did not participate in the recalls (must already have the latest parts in them) and they came at a higher price.

OK, so mine was made in 1/05. Does that make it a late one?

The only '05 recall I know of is the TPS, were there others?

Yes.

No.

There is a notice about Yamaha top boxes that applies. They wobble and can crack the mount. A neoprene sheet spacer is Yamaha's fix.
