My father has a 2005 FJR abs with 61,000 miles . The bike runs great but only at an idle it has a very annoying metalic clatter. It started at about 20,000 mi but has not gotten any louder . It stops at 1400 rpm 3 local dealers are clueless but they dont think its a timing chain noise. Any help or sugestions please.

Noise from the right side of the engine? Up high. Goes away as soon as the engine is under load?

If so, the three local dealers are worse than clueless, it's the Cam Chain Tensioner, a known weak point. The chain and cam gears are fine, it's just the spiral plastic tensioner that develops a dead spot and won't maintain tension. Sometimes the spring itself breaks, causing the issue.

My '04 has had two replacements in 125k. First at 60k, then again at 90k.

As an aside - have the valves been checked? 26k interval for clearance checks.

Gunny. Sounds like the classic symptoms.

Sure sounds like a CCT failure to me as well.

Note I didn't say "impending" failure. When the chain starts making noise, the CCT is already past the point of effectiveness and needs some TLC (and replacement!)

ps: You've been riding with angels for 41,000 miles.

+1. And, if the bike IS due for a valve check, most of the work to get to the CCT is identical to that done to shim the valves, so get 'em done together and save some labor $$$.

GET IT DONE NOW...

do not pass go...do not collect $200...avoid having to look for a replacement engine and someone qualified to remove the old twisted pieces of metal,

and properly installing a new one (engine)

I might not even crank it up again before that CCT is replaced...new part # now with improved CCT design (longer plunger)

If the lack of proper CCT allows the cam chain to jump teeth...well, ya looking at replacing the engine and ruining your whole day

no one, and I mean no none wants to be a member of this:

the fuse in your bomb of an engine has been lit

seriously, be forewarned

Mike - Stop beating around the bush and tell this guy what you mean. :p
Gunny.

I too was on barrowed time and survived. I'm glad I did it. :D

50.5k miles and mine has been chattering for perhaps 5k miles. Its going to get replaced with the upcoming 52k valve check. Heck for $71 it's woth it.
