2005 R1 at 190

Guy I work with has an 05 R1. Claimed this past weekend to have it up to 190mph.

BS or the real deal?

If it's stock, perhaps he saw an indicated 190 mph which would be about 170ish in the real world.

Cycle World ran an '06 R1 LE to 181 mph last year: https://www.cycleworld.com/article.asp?sect...p;page_number=5 which they implied was the lowest top-speed of the open class bikes they tested.

not sure if his bike is stock or not...

yes, 190 on a stock bike is bs. even if it had the power and aerodynamics to go 190, which it doesn't, the electronics on a stock bike won't let it. they are all limited to 300kph, which comes out to be 186mph. they agreed to this a few years ago when the busa and 12r were proposed to do above 190. it was a voluntary restriction, so they didn't have a speed limit imposed on them.

Above 80mph or so, most motorcycle speedo's are notorious optimistic. A friend of mine put a speedo-healer on his VFR and ended up dialing in about 8% correction IIRC, to get it even close to GPS reading. He may see 190 on the speedo, but actual speed is much less.
