I have located a 2005 with 8700 miles (great price) and a 2006 with 3800 miles (reasonably priced),

and was wondering if the 2006 is that much better than the 2005?

Thanks from a FNG in BTR

Didn't Yamaha de-tune the '06 so it would put out less heat ? ('05 owner of course...)
YUP SURE DID. THEY PUT THE FRENCH 106HP RESTRICTION CHIP IN THE 06'S TO HELP REDUCE HEAT....BUT THANK THE LORD THAT THEY CHANGED IT BACK FOR THE 07'S

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH :clapping: :clapping: :yahoo:

Major differences are:

Air flow management. https://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/airManagement.aspx

At 70MPH in high gear, RPM's are approximately 500 less on the 06's and 07's compared to the 05's.

06 and 07 model years now come standard with linked braking and ABS.

Major Differences (cont.):

Fairings are different (And wings to manage air around rider's legs).

Windshield is different.

Seats are different (driver's is adjustable for height).

Bike is narrower (measured across the panniers).

Forks are different (parts will not interchange with previous models).

More ventilation through and around dashboard (Fresh air in the cockpit).

Dashboard is different.

Handlebars are adjustable (rotate to change angle of grips fore-and-aft).

More insulation between engine and gas tank.

Swingarm is longer.

The aftermarket sources for farkles are up-to-speedm so there is nothing for the OldGen that is not available for the NewGen.

My advice:

If you can, buy the NewGen bike. The air management is THAT much better and there aren't reports of HOT bikes as with the '03-'05s. The differences in handling w/ the longer swingarm are negligible and IF you notice it (I didn't when I test rode an '06 on mountain roads), suspension tuning (aftermarket shocks and fork springs) would likely make up any difference. As the models age and if Yamaha redesigns the bike in 2 years or so, the '05 will be even more dated. There are many on this forum who have owned both generations of the FJR and I can't think of one who would go back to the OldGen.

If you must buy the '05, this is a win-win choice because I highly doubt you would be disappointed with either iteration. They are fantastic (The Governator's favorite adjective) bikes. (A strictly unbiased opinion from someone who as owned an '04 & an '05).

Let us know which you end up with, so we can..... :clapping: :yahoo: :clapping: :yahoo:

The ones I've noted, as a future buyer:

-GenIIs have a gear position indicator. I like that.

-Mirrors are much better looking on GenII as well.

I honestly wouldn't get an old gen unless strapped for cash. Take care.

I just don't know what's the deal with heated grips. NOWHERE in Yammi's website says anything about that, but I think AEs have it standard. My other question is if the wires are hanging below the girps, which looks immensely cheap, and I would NEVER do that. Just curious. Later gang.

Most of the '05FJR owners will tell you that by the time the '06FJR's came out, we had already changed-out and farkeled everything possible anyway. Both bikes are good. My advise is to try it before you buy it. That is the one thing that NEW FJR owners have in common. We all bought the new year bikes blind! You would have a great advantage over us if you could ride it first. Then choose what fits you best. Aside from crashing a used FJR, I personally think it is hard to hurt or ware it out. ;)

No one has mentioned the most obvious difference... Sex appeal

Pure sex appeal

The jury is still out of course, but it is possible that with the '06 models Yamaha fixed the ticking/valve guide/seal issue as well. If the price premium is manageable for you go for the '06. You might have a dry clutch/downshifting issue instead! <_<
