2007 Canadian Rally

OK,

I have done some digging and have come up with these options

It really depends on how many are thinking of coming and what people are prepared to put up with.

If you want a nice hotel then there are two in Kanata (West Ottawa) But these are 20 mins riding from either me or Colin. Rooms are ~$100 Cdn

Motor Hotel

There are two in Carleton Place and one in Kanata, Rooms are around $70 CDN

Cottage

There are cottages in the Calabogie area, one I found sleeps 10 for ~$600CDN for the weekend

Warning with the track opening up I expect that all the local Calabogie Accommodations to be booked solid soon, the track has over 150 days planned for 2007.

Finally I have camping space for 10 and there is a cottage next door which I can ask if we can use (may have to pay) for another 10, (I think it has beds for 4 and I can sort out some cots to turn the lounge into a bunk house).

I've left Colin room for two options in case he has any better ideas.

I personally vote for a hotel. Nice but reasonable cost. When I finally start looking around for one what I envisioned was one in a location where there is at least one if not more restaurants within walking distance. If not walking, then at least a couple minutes ride.

That leads to the next problem. As great an area as the Calabogie area (and north) is for riding. That particular area is a little thin on hotel and restaurant options.

So I have been giving this a bit of thought and what I see at the moment is the "base" hotel is moved slightly further to the west. Haliburton/Huntsville neck of the woods. The more central location would allow the rides to range out in more directions and cover more ground. It would (should, hopefully) allow a wider range of options for hotel\restaurant when I finally get out and start looking around.

So, if I were to add an option or two to the votes above they would be

Colins Option 1 --> Hotel in the greater Bancroft Area

Colins Option 2 --> Hotel in the greater Huntsville Area.

(BugR, I have no idea how to change the vote options, can you edit it for me)

And to anyone who doesn't care but wants to vote hotel. Then pick the Motor Hotel option and I'll interpret that as dont care as to location.

I like those creature comforts of a motel/hotel but I don't need the Ritz. It would be nice to park the bikes outside the door of your room. How about something around Barry's Bay? There was a chain motel( Best Wertern) in Bancroft I stay at a couple of years ago and it was to bad.I can't remember the price. It was right on the main drag.

Please take these as only suggestions.

As I remember from my road rally days there are some pretty good routes around Bancroft, although I'm not sure how good they might be for two wheels. And there used to be a kick-ass hotel in Bancroft too. Huntsville has some nice roads around, and they could provide both long and short rides much easier than Bancroft. And if one wanted to, they could do the circle route around Georgian Bay in one day as long as the ferry cooperates.

I think Arnprior would be better than either Carleton Place or Kanata - I could only see doing Kanata if doing the tourist thing in Ottawa was an objective - as it gives access to some good routes in both Ontario and Quebec.

I voted for Colin's option 2; hope the timing lets me play.

Great minds think alike! I've been strongly considering including a route sheet for this very ride for a while now. I did it a couple times as a weekend trip two summers ago. Great ride with a nice break in the middle. Don't know if I would set it up for the Sat-Sun ride. But it would make a good ride if run clockwise on friday. Depart hotel early friday morning, head around the south end and up to Tobermory in time for the mid-day ferry. Lunch on the boat. Back late friday night. And the friday night run would be southbound and therefore wouldn't have alot of cottagers getting in the way. (Most are northbound on a Friday night).

I'm starting to think that enough interest is being shown that I am now thinking it is time to get off my ass and start looking around. I'm hoping to take a day-trip up to the Bancroft-Huntsville-Haliburton area over the Xmas break and see whats available. Searching the internet is nice, but there is no replacement for actually going there and seeing for yourself.

It did clear up a few issues, we are looking for a Hotel/ motel either

Not sure he would be up for a valve adjust clinic... But something like that,a little more laided back, that could be done in the parking lot of the hotel with a couple of beers would be nice.

BTW I was to his first rally he held. But now we are dating our selves :blink:

As for a ride any time soon.... as soon it warms up and this sand and salt is off the roads.
