It looks like this probelm is continuing to the 2009 models. I brought my bike in for the first service (600 miles). I had my local mechanic do the service as the dealer was too busy to get me in this week. He thinks the sound is coming from the fork preload spacers. He suggested to ride the bike for a thousand miles to let the springs settle in and then we might replace the spacers. Does this make sense? I will check rotors and brake pads tonight (as suggested by earlier posts).
Horse ****!...

1) Check your rotors

2) Retorque your head bearings.

- Knocking will go away.

3) Fire that dumbshit who wants you to let your fork springs settle.

I noticed some new recent rattling and checked the front end. One brake caliper main bolt completely missing and a screw holding the fender on (on other side) were both missing. Damn those things are expensive. Rather than a glance over before every ride, I'm taking time to look everything over closely just in case and locktighting what I can.

I have a 2014 and the front brake pad rattle is ridiculous. I have had people walking along side the road look when I go by wondering what the heck the noise is. No excuse for this in y opinion.

One of the reasons to do your own wrenching. If you rely on the dealer to get things right good luck. I am currently disasembling my clutch on my 2015 with 1,225 miles on it. I want it done right. So I do it myself. When I screw up, its on me. It is still under waranty but screw it. Just as much hassle to have them do it anyway.

Bought my fjr new in 2012, coming up to the 600 mile service and a front end clunk started to happen when on uneven road surfaces and when braking, so thought it would be sorted under warranty. Put the bike in for 600 mile service, told the dealer about the clunk and suggested that the headstock bearings might need tightening up.

Collected the bike after service, and was told they could not find anything wrong, and something along the lines of, " They all do that, it's due to a bit of loose play in the brake pads".

********.

Took the bike home and removed top yoke, torqued the bearings up, as per Yamaha schedule, boxed everything up and 34000 miles later, the clunk has never returned.

All servicing since then has been done by me, if you want a job done properly, then do it yourself!!!

Personally, I wouldn't trust a dealer to put air in my tyres. Just my humble opinion.
