Need help badly. I parked her with no problem, the next day she won't start at all. The instrument panel has power, signal light indicators lit constantly, fuel gauge bars flashing, no horn, no power to the windshield, starter will not fire, and no power to the signal lights. When the ignition is on, I get 12 volts in the fuse panels. I checked all the connectors thinking it's only a loose connection and maybe there are some sort of corrosion in the connectors. Every connectors are good and no sign of corrosion at all. Help Help Help....

Congratulations, you've just been bitten by the "spider"

Do a search for "ground spider" and you'll find all the info you need.

Q. How do I know (for certain) if I have a ground spider failure?

A. You don't, but here's some definite symptoms associated with failure of Ground Spider-S4, that 's located in the left side of the engine compartment, tucked behind the coolant rail...

* Bike will not start. Starter does not turn over, click or otherwise show any sign of life.
* When the ignition is initially switched ON; the tach and speedo hands sweep and return to zero as normal.
* With the ignition in the ON position; glovebox will not open, no power to the horn, windshield motor does not move, the turn signal indicators are lit solid, the fuel gauge blinks then pauses, Hi-beam indicator is ON solid.

S4 location is tight, shown here:

Your bike should have been the subject of a re-call that would have prevented this from happening, check with your dealer. It should be fixed at no cost to you.

If you haven't found it by now, there's a recall on it. Forget about troubleshooting and get it down to your dealer for a free repair.

Has the recall been performed on the bike? If not, then bring it to the local dealer. If yes, then bring it to the dealer more quickly!!!

Oh, and if the recall had already been performed, make certain to file a report with the NHTSC.

And be certain to specify that this was a machine on which the recall had been performed - this is a very dangerous problem because the machine simply drops dead and all lighting is extinguished - think about what might happen if the problem occurs during a late night ride on a dark, twisting country road . . . .

I found the culprit. S4 melted. I stripped the wires and connect them all together (not soldered yet) but now there is no power to the instrument panel at all, and when I disconnected the big wire power in the instrument panel is back. I think this is the wire that is hooked up to the ground. I can't bring it to the dealer because I am now here in the Philippines and the only help I have is this Forum which I value so much. Everytime I hook up the big wire to the wires I lose power in the instrument panel. The bike still have the same original symptoms. What I forgot to do was to hook up the five wires to ground because I was getting frustrated. I know, patience, patience, patience. I will try to trace this big wire as far as I can. The rest of the spider grounds are good with no sign of corrosion at all. I have all the panels disassembled. Thanks again for all the help, I really appreciate everybody's effort.

BTW recall was done on the ignition switch.

Welcome to the "Spider Bite" club! ;(

My failure was a much less common S7 spider as I reported here: https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?showtopic=124616&st=0 . It's located above the left headlight.

In case you don't want to read the whole thread, here's what it looked like:

I cut the connector off and soldered all the wires together. Still working fine today with over 75,000 miles on the bike.

If you end up finding another spider failed, please report it in this thread: https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?showtopic=139511 and also at the NHTSA at www.safercar.gov . Make sure to clearly state that the failed grounding connector is not the one being addressed by NHTSA Campaign Number: 11V-338 (the recall fix for the S4 spider).

And key, tell them what isn't working that is safety related. Sudden power loss because the engine stops running, loss of lighting or signaling are safety failures and that's what gets the NHTSA moving. I worked with the NHTSA agent that led to the recall, and it's all about safety. BTW, the NHTSA agent is a nice guy that gets paid to read forums and travel to investigate problems. I'll even say he rides a nice BMW (from Maryland to Loudon NH for motorcycle rallies).

I printed this out and it is going in my bikes glove box. So when it happens to me I can just ring my hands in anger.

Nick Hisham is an active forum member in the philipenes. You may want to give him a shout or a PM. He must know someone local that works on FJR's.

The funny thing is that the S4 and S6 spiders have near similar symptoms.

The only difference is that the bike can start with the S6.

My mates S6 fault had the following:

High beam indicator on, no headlights
Both blinkers on full time, ½ brightness.
No horn
No windshield.

I suppose it's how Yamaha cascade the neutrals from one spider to another.

I will try to contact Nick, thanks. Anyway, the big wire I was tallking about is the one hooked up to the ground and everytime I hook it up with the five wires bundled together, all the lights in the instrument panel turn off and turn back on once disconnected. I found all 8 spiders and S4 is the only one bad, and I am also getting 12volts on S4 if the ground wire is disconnected. I traced the connection from S4 and it is connected to S3 or S2 I don't know which one is which and it is hooked up to the license plate light and if I remove the bulb I will get no light in the instrument panel, plug in the bulb, lights on with the same symptoms, hook up the ground wire for S4, all the light in the instrument panel turn off. WTF......Anything I miss..Oh please FJR guru I really need help. I also took apart the tapes in the wire bundles and I could not find any damage or anything shorted in the wires.

Can't find Nick Hisham in the member's list. There are Nicks but no Hisham.
Not much help but I THOUGHT Nick was based in Malaysia at least that's where most of his ride reports were from................
nik.hisham. Malaysia is split by a sea and the two halves at the closest point are no less than ~200 miles apart so people can both be in Malaysia but still be separated by 600 miles of water.
