2010 with hot feet, 2006 didn't have an issue

Strange that on the Gen II some people don't feel any heat, some only feel the heat on the lower left leg and some only on the lower right leg. I only feel it on the lower right, I think the person who posted about foam might be missing from the inside of the fairing may be on to something. Maybe some folks have it in place and have it missing on one side or the other. If it looks like packing foam maybe some dealers accidentally removed it. I'll have to get up off my butt and check it out before next summer. but it is riding season here now and just got in from a 300 mi ride with no heat!!!

I believe you about the heat around your feet . Look for something obstructing airflow ,but look more for a leaky exhaust system as this will put extremly hot air around the foot area .

Well my 10 is hot at the feet also. If I did not have WB pegs on I could not ride it in heat at all. I wear Alpine Star boots and good socks. I also wear full gear. It is the hottest bike I have ever ridden bar none.

I am either going to wrap the headers, Jet Coat them, or both! My heat shield is in place and has a layer of Dyna Mat over it also. The heat is not a nut roaster, but a foot roaster.

I also have Two Bothers exhaust and Power Commander.

I also have a front fender extender. Not sure if that is blocking flow, but have my doubts.

Not ready to chuck the bike and it is nice this time of year, but need to work at finding a solution of some type before Summer.

Yes I know it is a four but so was my BMW LT and it was never hot at all.

Not a ***** per say, but I do agree with the OP and it is not his imagination or just his bike.
Just wondering if you have come up with any solutions? Mine ('09)is so hot I'm seriously thinking of getting rid of it... help!!!

Have not worked on it at all.

It has been 40-55 degrees, riding the snot out of it here in PA.

I just am not sure what to do short of coating or warping the headers. Right now it feels great. But I am in heated gear and have it on in the 40's, yesterday was 55!

I have a Power Commander and am getting about 36-38 MPG so I do not believe I am lean. I may run to the DynoJet and have them dyno it and see if there is something to be done there. If not, then back to the headers.

What would be different about the '09, '10 that would cause heat issues? From '06 and up, heat management hasn't been an issue, and I haven't heard any complaints about the '11s or '12s, but will admit there aren't many '12s out there. Has anyone contacted Yamaha to ask if anything is different?

I only see a couple possibilities:

Something wasn't done correctly during assembly. They are running really...really lean to put off that much heat. Yamaha made a change and didn't tell anyone, like maybe thinning the headers for weight; although, that seems unlikely, or Yamaha changed the heat management materials...Maybe. Possibly, a few owners are just way more sensitive to felt heat than others. Maybe how/where the bikes are being ridden ie: always in town at lower speeds instead of more open faster paces...I'm sure I'm missing something, but what??

If you believe the heat is emanating from the headers then the fuelling is more likely to be on the rich side. This would generally result in lower MPG figures. With a 'richer' exhaust the fuel would be burnt off in the catalytic converter and converted to heat.

Suggest you get asbestos boots or do something about your fuelling

Don

I actually tried putting heat shield material in my right boot and it works but it is uncomfortable. Someone here said there is foam strips by each foot inside the faring. I looked and I have the foam in the left side ( I feel no heat on the left side) but no foam strip on the right side, which is the only place I feel the heat. I made up a piece of closed cell foam, 1 x 2 x 6 inches ( about the same size as the foam by the left foot) and covered it with heat shield material. I will glue this to the inside of the faring like the left side and test it out. I also just ordered 2 Cobra heat shields that are about 6-7 inches long and will attach them to the pipe where it goes up by your feet. I'll report back after playing around some more.

Wow. I am glad I did not upgrade to the supposedly heat fixed Gen2 !!

:assassin:
I just think that the trainees they use to unpack the MC at the dealers thought the foam was packing material and thru it out on some bikes. Strange that I have it on one side and not the other. However it is very uncomfortable, living here in the desert doesn't help either. No heat anywhere else just at my right foot, hopefully I can fix it or it will be sold.

How many miles on your bike?? I have 41k on my '07 and it has absolutely NO heat issues. If you're gonna get rid of your '09 anyway, but like the FJR, maybe we can trade. Your '09 for my '07. Of course, we would have to work out some details, but that's easy enough...Just so you know, I'm not kidding...If Ida known SGoat was gonna trade his '09 for that Beemer, I woulda traded with him and just given him the trade in value difference.

So...maybe an inexpensive fix would be to add foam on the right???

...or trade with HRZ?

Move to Nova Scotia Canada and you will be able to drive any year of FJR without heat issues, and in cooler weather the extra warmth is welcome.lol

The foam is in place on both sides on mine.

I actually started wrapping my shins in foil faced insulation (foil on outside) with velcro, looks kinda goofy but works great!

Just kidding, it ain't that bad.

Interesting that you have the foam in place on both sides. For those who are feeling the heat are you missing the foam piece on either side? For those who feel no heat do you have the foam in place on both sides? Man I hope that's all it is. I will put the foam on the right side of mine this weekend and see if it fixes the issue.

Yeah...I'm not thinking it has anything to do with any BS foam. The foam that is in the end of the fairings seem to be little insignificant pieces of junk. There's so much air flow there that a small amount of foam wouldn't have any impact anyway. Has anyone called Yamaha yet to see about changes, or are you all still just chasing your tails looking for a problem that may not exist??

Well it seems to have everything to do with the foam. I glued/taped a piece of 1 x 2 x 6" to the inside of the right fairing as far back as it could go by my right foot. I just got back from a 2 hr ride, even though the temp gauge only showed it to be 81 deg out, but the right side is now cooler than the left that has the original flimsy foam in it. The foam is positioned so that the heat can't rise up off the cat, it goes under and out the back of the bike. I will now replace the left side factory foam too. I now feel what you guys say is normal heat for a 1300 cc bike with a fairing about the same as my old VFR, very happy with the out come!!!

I have the foam in place both sides of my bike, but it still seems a bit hot. I'm thinking of replacing the foam like you did to see if it helps. What kind of foam did you use? I'm worried that if I use the wrong kind of foam it will melt. Thanks!

Wonder if anything changed with the catalytic converters between 2006 and 2010 that would cause more heat around the feet?
