2013 FJR Adjustable Vents

It's pretty cold in Canada right now for riding and I was wondering what results riders have had with using the adjustable vents on the 2013 FJR. I have left the vents in the position that the bike was delivered. I have moved them to the upward position but don't see that there would be any great difference in in the stock position. What results have you found when opening up the vents?

 
I had my salesman demonstrate how to move one but then put it back into the original position because it's still very cold here, in fact we are having a spring blizzard right now, and I wanted all the engine heat I could get on me right now. Will putting the vents in the other position make a big difference in warm weather? It's hard to tell right now, lets wait till July and then I can tell if it helps or not. It's bound to be better than my 95 Concours was.

 
The "out" position is better in cold weather.....supposably.

When i picked mine up on October 29th last year i had to show the salesman how to do it, i also had to show him again at the bike show in Long Beach.....

I just did a 2000 mile ride in the cool California spring weather. I put my "vents" in the out position and think it helped, at least marginally, in keeping me warmer. To me -- and I may be wrong, of course -- but I view the vents being "out" similar to the windshield being "Up"...more deflection of the cool air so that it doesn't hit you so much. As for engine heat being directed to who-knows-where...I don't see a difference.

 
The owner's manual says, "the cowling vents can be opened 20 mm for added ventilation to suit the riding conditions." I guess we know where political speech writers write in the off season as it really doesn't say what direction the added ventilation is supposed to be heading.

 
Hey Fairlaner. Similar experience when I picked up mine, I asked the mechanic and the sales manager to show me how the vents worked. They had to read the manual to figure it out. Hmmmm, I could have done that!

It's times like this when I'm riding in 3 degrees Celsius weather that I miss my 2005 FJR with the engine heat issue!

I read the manual and still cant figure out how they move. I see the thumb screw in the bottom. what do you do to change the posistion?

Loosen or remove the thumb screw and push the panel away (toward the front of the bike). It should slide an inch or so and be free of the slot that holds it, then you can just pull it out. There are two sets of slots - one set above the other. The top set of slots holds the panel out. One of mine didn't really want to go back into the inner slot. I had to jimmy it for about 5 min to get it to slide back in.I think I'll just leave it alone. Never used them on the Gen II.

 
I think those panels are somewhat of a joke as far as I'm concerned, and always have been.

I think they have some effect, but it's not dramatic. They're so easy to change I changed 'em to see how to do it more than anything else. From now on, I'll probably leave 'em alone.

 
I rode with mine in the out position most of the winter. And although it only gets to about 38-45 here, I really couldnt notice a difference from when they were in. Now, on my '09, I *could* tell the difference. But mama yammy has apparently fixed the heat issue.

Didn't they fix the heat issue with the second Gen??

Well gen2 was certainly much better than gen1...but gen 3 is a noticeable difference.

Yep
Nope. The amount of heat the Gen 1 and Gen 2 are the same.

To be clear, they changed the way they manage the heat, not the amount of heat generated. Both are the same 1300cc engine producing the same amount of energy and combusting fuel the same way.

The Gen 2 does much better at keeping heat away from the rider through a variety of techniques--one of which is a set of adjustable vents not present on Gen 1. However, I think the far better technique they used to keep heat off the whiny short-wearing nads of Gen 2 owners in flip-flops (I couldn't not insert a dig somewhere in here) has to do with how the don't cycle fuel through a rail from the tank...and far less heat is transferred to the tank.

Not really after after only 100 posts and the history of so many missing this particular distinction of internal combustion power plant engineering. I do now...thank you.

Where is Odot when we need his advise. Just change the pumpkin oil and make sure the battery is not ready for change out. Oh yes, we are taliking 2013 bike, just change the pumpkin oil!!! The engine heat will keep you toastie warm.
