I am second owner of a 2013 and I noticed that sometime the cruise does not engage when I hit the set switch. I was told by another rider that it appeared my brake lights were staying on. I checked that in my garage and lubed the rear brake pedal and checked the front brake lever and all seemed good. I went out again and the cruise did not engage. Then later in the day it did. Bike is out of warranty. Any ideas?? thanks.

At what speed would the cruise not set? What gear were you in?

Good on ya for lubing the brake pedal. The rear brake light switch is adjustable, make sure that the switch is off when the brake is off.

also be aware that if you try to engage the cruise control at the same moment that you are twisting the throttle, it might not engage if the control unit thinks the throttle setting in that gear would result in a speed over 82 indicated.

Sounds like a confirmation that your brake light is sticking on from your buddy and this WILL cause the cruise to not engage. You said you lubed the rear brake pedal, but how did you lube it? Just squirting some WD40 around the pivot area may not fix the problem because WD40 is not a good lubricant and it won't get inside very well and flush crud out. You really need to pull the pedal, clean everything and properly grease it. If you're especially energetic, google this forum for a mod that installs a grease zerk for much easier lubing in the future.

But before fixing a problem, I always like to try and duplicate it. With the ignition on, kneel on the right side of the bike and very gingerly try to push the brake pedal down and cause it to stick. Do this repeatedly with gentle or rough pushes and even while forcing the pedal sideways. Try to get it to fail because if it fails in your garage, it will surely fail on the road. This works better in a dim garage so you can watch the brake light.

Thanks guys. I couldn't get the brakes to stick in the garage. I always engage the cruise in 5th gear and obviously under 80 mph. I didn't use wd40 to lube the rear pedal but I didn't pull it off either. Keep the ideas coming please as I will be riding tomorrow and see what happens.

The brake switch on the pedal or the lever might be set too be too sensitive.... test when it engages, if it's right away, I would back it off a bit. The switch at the lever may not be adjustable..........

If not the rear brake switch, could it be the clutch switch? It can get gummed up and is easily cleaned. Also, it (or the front brake) could be making intermittant contact if the levers are adjusted all the way in or if you are using some aftermarket levers. The rear brake seems the most likely but there are other things that could prevent setting the CC.

I've had this problem with my 2014's cruise control. A helpful tech at Hinshaw's Honda Motorcycles showed me how to fix it. Just remove your front brake lever and glue or attach a shim to the back (side between the tang on the lever and the small button). I just hot glued a strip of a tin can. It was enough added material so the button disengaged when the brake lever was released, allowing the cruise control to set. Apparently the tang on the lever isn't always thick enough, or the button is "tall" enough on some bikes.

Mine's been working flawlessly since the fix.

Good luck.

buy the factory service manual, it will step you through troubleshooting the cc and retreiving any stored information.

i had to re-adjust the rear brake switch to solve my issue.
