I just put my hands on a 2017 ES model. I am changing all the fluids before I ride it (not that I can ride it right now...). For those of you that have already done a fork oil change on a gen 3ES model, what is the socket/ wrench size of the fork caps? There is an outer and an inner ring. I do not want to bugger up the stepper motor... Certainly, on a gen 1 the inner ring is the preload and the outer ring is the fork cap. Same on a gen 3? Sorry for my ignorance but the service manual is not very clear on this!

Thanks

Luis

No preload adjust on ES forks. The parts fiche is a good resource on how theyll come apart.

Out of curiosity, how many miles on that bike that it needs the fork oil changed already? Ive not yet felt a need to change it on my 2014 with 30k miles on it. Its actually hydraulic fluid, not oil, but you probably knew that.

Hi Fred, thanks for your answer. to be honest it is more out of boredom than anything else. I wanted to see how they come apart and see for myself how the magic of the ES happens. I wanted to systematically change all fluids cause I do not know for how long they have been there. Will be doing oil, filter, brake, coolant... I did not even think of the fact that of course you are right! It is not oil duh! Thanks mate!

The ES fork fluid change really is a 2- person job and is not needed until at least 40k miles. Did mine at about 50k and the fluid was not in bad shape but changing it seemed to refresh the feel of the front suspension. Also note there is a special tool required to remove the inner piston on each side and to reinstall it. Once you do both, the prices is easier the second time. PM Yamafitter for more details on the process since he helped me. G/l

Don't forget to refresh the clutch as well.
