I had a very slow-speed fall-over when I first got my bike, and Progressive paid off very well for me too. The covered every piece that had even the most minor scratch and didn't quibble at all with the shop's estimate.

Then, the next year my rate went up something like 30% as I remember. I called and was told it was because I'd made a claim. I pointed out that I'd been insuring bikes for 45 years at that point and this was my first claim ever and I figured I was probably still among the best risks they could insure. They said there was nothing they could do.

I shopped around and went to Geico on both bikes, and it was within pennies of being the same rate Progressive had charged before the claim.

I'm not trying to be negative, but it'd be interesting if you could check back when it's time to renew and let us know what happens.
I've had Geico for some years now, cars and bikes so multi policy discount. My FJR was costing me just under $275/yr, and good rate in the cars as well with other discounts. at one point I had two bikes insured for less than $500.
I changed a bank account where I had automatic draft... One payment was missed because I forgot to update Geico, i somehow missed the notifications and policy canceled - argh! As soon as I found out, within 8 days, it was fixed. I lost my discounts and my FJR went to over $475 although never before a payment had been missed or lapsed coverage. They just did not care no matter how long I have been with them without any claims.
These insurance companies are evil!
I shopped around and it there was nowhere I could find coverage for the price I had before losing the discount.
BTW - that 8 day lapse, it's not like with cars where insurance is mandatory where one may have been driving uninsured (illegally) so you get penalized for that. In FLA bike is insurance is optional if you wear a helmet, so at no point was i riding illegally (without insurance).

As I remember - Fla motorcycle insurance goes like this (but it's been a while since I read up on it):
Under 21, must have insurance and helmet and a special mc lic plate indicating that so its easy for LEO to spot. It's red print and states "under 21“ at the bottom.
Over 21, insurance or medical coverage proof is mandatory if you ride without a helmet, and you get a reg mc lic plate.
Past that age group (over 21) - if no helmet = mandatory motocycle insurance or med coverage; w/helmet = motorcycle insurance optional, but must have medical insurance.

If this similar to other states?

GEICO (Government Employee Insurance Company) used to only be available "government employees" (duh).

I had them for years until some time in the 80s when they opened up to the world. Overnight my rates started skyrocketing as higher risk groups were brought in and advertising paid for on the back of existing customers.

I switched to Geico about 10 years ago. They have a reputation for being very difficult to deal with when you file a claim, but the price was the lowest I could find at the time. Well, earlier this year I bought a new vehicle for my wife and decided to look around for prices for insurance. I found Amica had not only the lowest prices in my area but also a very high rating for customer service.

Nope. NY and NJ both require helmets and insurance for all riders regardless of age.
