At the end of June, Sooze and I took a little long weekend ride out to Oklahoma. I thought I’d put this turd of a ride report together for the hell of it.

Thursday, June 26, 2014.

Once Sooze got home from work, we hopped on the FJR and headed out. If we had more time, we would have done something cool, like, stay off the F’n slab. Unfortunately, we did not have the time and were relegated to the grand interstate system to get us where we were going.

To say the least, Interstate 70 heading west outta Columbus sucks donkey balls. But oh well, right?

There was this thunderhead in the distance. You could see that it was dropping rain. We caught just a wee little bit of dampness out of it, but it was kinda nice to look at.

For you guys and gals in Indianapolis – why does it ALWAYS rain when we go through? All in all, the weather was very pleasant this evening. Until Indianapolis. As we approached the city, there was a big-*** rain cloud that utterly DUMPED on us. We just kept riding through it and, once through Indianapolis, it was dry. Of course. At least we got to see a double-rainbow!

Continuing on our way, we got a decent sunset.

We stayed the night at the Geek’s Preferred Hotel of Choice in torn-to-hell Terre Haute, IN. The folks at the hotel were pretty nice and the hotel was sold out. Busy, busy place.

After settling into our room, we started walking, looking for a place to eat dinner. There is a mall next to the hotel, and we saw a place we had never been to, so we headed into Bagger Dave’s for some sammiches and craft brews.

They have a choo-choo train on elevated tracks going around the restaurant.

We were both pretty hungry since we didn’t get on the road until after work-ish.

I don’t remember exactly what I had but it was decent enough.

And that’s a wrap for Thursday. Coming next – Friday!

Friday, June 27, 2014.

We headed to the crowded lobby for the hotel’s continental breakfast and, after hip-checking a lady old enough to be my grandmother, were able to secure seating and eat in relative peace.

Lately it seems like, when it comes to road trips on the bike, we encounter unseasonably cool temperatures which makes life suck for Sooze ‘cause she gets cold easier than I do. For this trip, though, that would NOT be an issue.

Getting ready to roll, you can see there isn’t a cloud in the sky.

Sooze noticed this – I completely missed it.

Not long after, we were in Illinois.

Since we had all day to get to our destination for the evening, and it was early, and we’d gained an hour, we decided what the heck – let’s check it out. The World’s Largest Wind Chime is in Casey, IL. Casey is kind of your typical small Midwestern town.

And they are proud of their wind chime.

Somehow I missed it the first time, and I pulled a Bungie and parked out back.

This whole thing is still pretty new and there was a fella out there working on the landscaping. We struck a conversation with him and he filled us is on how the town (especially gas stations and fast-food joint owners) loves the wind chimes. He was a super-nice guy and offered to snap a couple of pictures of us.

Yeah, we’re geeks. We love stuff like this.

One other attraction in Casey, IL, is just down the road. The fella at the wind chime encouraged us to go and check it out if for no other reason than to meet the gal who works at that attraction. Oh – the next attraction was the World’s Largest Golf Tee.

They even built a viewing platform thingamabob.

The gal that worked there was, well… My grandmother would have described this gal as a “fart in a skillet.” High-energy, full of stories, and nice as can be. She snapped a couple of pictures for us as well.

After buying a couple of trash ‘n trinkets, we headed out, and rode by the next great attraction in Casey, IL: the World’s Largest Rocking Chair. The current World’s Largest Rocking Chair is in Cuba, Missouri, on Route 66.

Casey, IL, also has the World’s Largest Knitting Needles and Crochet Hook, but the store where they are kept was closed because of construction. Oh, well – use your imagination.

We continued on our merry way.

Ahh, the slab. Before long, we were in Missouri.

Crossing the Mighty Mississippi, we noticed a couple of lighthouse-looking structures out in the water. This was the best shot that Sooze could get.

Wait – I thought we already were in Missouri?

They are VERY welcoming in Missouri. Unlike New Jersey. Bastages.

After bypassing St. Louis, we started getting hungry, especially after riding through a spot that smelled of such awesome BBQ, I almost needed to wipe the drool outta my helmet.

A ways up the road, we found a little BBQ joint / shack along the road. They had a big smoker out front, and we were ready for lunch.

The smoker out front.

I had their ribs and was disappointed – I was really expecting them to be fall-off-the-bone tender and they were not. Sooze had the smoked turkey sammich and liked it!

The place is kind of a dive.

Two Dudes BBQ. Get the turkey.

Eventually we got off the damn slab and headed for the Kansas City area where we would be staying the evening with the ShowMeMo clan.

Upon arriving at the ShowMeMo’s Home Base, we chit-chatted for a bit and headed to grab some dinner. Dinner consisting of…. Well, if BBQ is good for lunch, it’s good for dinner, too! Mmmm….. Beef tips….

Mr. & Mrs. ShowMeMo (left) and me & Sooze (right).

After dinner, back at the house, we hung out with the ShowMeMo clan and had a few good laughs.

After a while, we headed outside and got a nice fire up and rolling.

And that’s a wrap for Friday. Good times.

Hmmm, a road trip from fly-over Columbus to fly-over Oklahoma. All road trips are great somehow, and this one has big chimes and a real tee off so far with double BBQ. Somehow I think Bikergeek will pull one out of his helmet.

Thanks for the RR Andy. As others mentioned, too bad you missed getting a burger at Moonshine. As for rain in Indy, I don't have that problem so maybe it is just you (not sooze)!
