I'm a bit backed up here at work, due to being off most of last week, sooooo.......this may take a couple days to put this report together. There were 5 of us all friends some old and some fairly new. There was bookoo's of fun, and horrifying at times as well. We experienced warm sun, and cold rain, some in the form of dangerous drenching downpours, the worst wind I have ever ridden in. These 5 days had most all one can experience in a mc adventure, some things I wish never happened. Anyway, let me intorduce you to the cast and crew:

From left to right..Mike w/his 919. Mike and I grew up together, we were next door neighbors, he was about 3 and I was about 6 when we first met. Followed next by Charles w/his FJR, a friend of many years, he is a member here (bristercl) but seldom if ever actually posts. Then there is Don w/his Harley Geezerglide as he calls it. Don use to work with me, he has since retired and is 68 years of age, he's got about 100k on the odo of this bike. Then there is me, just an old hippie who dont know what to do. And, lastly there is my neighbor Tray w/his DL1000.

So, there's your introduction, I have to go ck the mail now, but I'll be back a little later.

Yup, that would be correct. We saw some, but not as many as I expected. There was a group of 3 held up in a church parkinglot as we came out of 421, radar pointed at each of us..........but we were good at least at that moment  No $ was donated to either the TN or NC general fund by anyone on this trip.

A couple details FWIW

Total miles: 1742

AMPG: 48

Tray, Don, Charles and I left MS on Friday 5/9 and rode to B'ham AL where Don, Charles and Tray spent the night w/Mike. Mike is divorced and has a huge house affluent area (will remain anonymous as to not offend Fencer  ) and plenty of room. I soldiered on to my mothers house for the night, after all it was mother's day weekend. This provided me the opportunity to spend some time w/mom, though brief, it's always great to see mom.

The trip from MS to AL was uneventful, a simple slab on I20, nothing to see here folks so move along.

This trip was originally scheduled for April, it was Charles idea, but obviously Charles had not put a whole lot of thought into the timing as he was to get married in early April, so......I kinda expected a call.....which finally came.....along the lines of ummmm you think we can put this trip off until May?? Told him hell no, we were not going to let something like a stupid wedding get in the way <_< I mean get your priorities straight dude!

So, May it was...........and on mothers day weekend. Tray and I had put together some really nice routes and even routed the slab ride up to our first night, which was Roan Mountain TN at the state park. We rented 2 cabins there for 2 nights. The plan was to take a full day to get there, then the next morning ride 421 and some other roads. Maybe some of you read last months Rider mag.? Salvadore had written up a ride through this area and mapped it in this story. So, we took Tray's Zumo and copied that same route.

Anyway, on Saturday morning 5/10 I called the guys and they had changed the plans for the route up to Roan Mountian. Mike wanted to stay off the interstate as much as possible. His 919 is neked and he takes a pounding on the interstate, so we agreed to take hwy 411 as far and as long as possible.

Here is Mike ahead of me on 411 on our way to Chattanooga TN

IMGP2300.jpg

The ride up was nice, the weather excellent, however it was 2 ET by the time we finally arrived in Chattanooga. We still had another 300 miles to go. An executive decision had to be made. At this rate it would take us 3 days to get there. So, we hit the interstate there in Chattanooga and slabbed it the rest of the way. Arrived at Roan Mountain State Park just about dusk.

Not sure if anyone here has ever been to Roan Mountain TN, but trust me when I say it's a 1 horse town. No stoplight, no stop sign. When we arrive at the state park and secure the cabin keys, then unload the bikes, it's 8:30. The whole town shuts down at 9 and we have to find somewhere to grab a bite to eat. We finally found this little pizza joint that was getting ready to close, but agreed to prepare us some pizzas to go. They locked the door behind us while they made our dinner. Laoded them in the trunks and headed back to the cabin for the night.

IMGP2304.jpg

Don and I stayed in 1 cabin and Mike, Tray and Charles in the other. The cabins rented for 100 per night. They were clean and comfortable, full kitchen and bath, heated and cooled. I would recommend them. Roan Mountain State Park is fairly central to some really great roads, made a perfect home base.

IMGP2342.jpg

I think Tray is trying to locate that squirrel in the attic

IMGP2339.jpg

The woodburning stove was a nice addition, it turned cold and wet while there. The park put's firewood on the porch, it's included in the price, no x-tra charge.

IMGP2338.jpg

Cabins sleep 3 comfortable. A set of twin beds in the loft and a queen bed downstairs.

As luck would have it, that first night the weather turned for the worse. By morning there were storms and rain all around us. Don and I are the early risers, thats why we bunked together. We got up that next morning and rode to town for early breakfast before the rain set in.

IMGP2306.jpg

Ck Don's Geezerglide carefully, you'll see more detail in later pics. Don has a lot of $ tied up in that paint. While there eating they let us ck out their computer where we looked at local weather radar. Looked like a narrow band would pass through our area a little later that morning, then catch several hour break before a huge storm hit by mid/late afternoon. So, it became apparant we were not going to be able to get Salvadore's full route in that day, but we did decide to do a small part which included 421, the technical part between Mountain City, TN and Shadey Valley. Hopefully we would be back before the heavy stuff hit...........wrong!

IMGP2319.jpg

Checking the weather radar at Shadey Valley...............it aint look'n good. The bad stuff is moving in faster than originally thought. Tray..........you ready to haul ass back to Roan Mountain?

IMGP2313.jpg
:p

The ride back started nice, dry, but got ugly quick. Rain started coming down hard and the wind picked up and did not stop for over 24 hours. Stopped at local grocery and picked up some stuff to cook in the cabin. None of us wanted to get back out in that crap once we got back. So we just stayed in and ate and drank!

On the way back I stopped at the park welcome center for a couple quick pics.

IMGP2329.jpg

IMGP2325.jpg

Didn't want to go all the way to Roan Mountain w/o going to the top for the view. Probably wasn't the best decision given the weather......nobody else wanted to go along, so I went alone. It would have been a much nicer ride if the weather had just cooperated. Very cold, wet and WINDY up there!

Lunch hour's over............back to work.

We (Jeff Ashe, his girl Karen & me) were in the same area a couple of weeks ago. It was cold, foggy & winds were wipping around 40 MPH

Monday.........May 12

Started pretty much the same Sunday May 11 ended. The morning was misty rain, cold and WINDY! What an ominous start. If we had only a clue for what this day would bring.

Leaving Roan Mountain

IMGP2343.jpg

This day takes us a distance of 230 miles, a mixture of mountain twisties, state highways and even a bit of interstate I40 through Asheville. Our destination was Tellico Plains, TN and a night at Cherohala Motorcycle Resort. Wish I could give you the exact route, but Tray and I programed the route into his Zumo before we left on the trip, and I simply cannot recall all the roads. Part of the route included the Blueridge Parkway only to find the one stretch we wanted to ride between Mt. Mitchell and Asheville was closed for construction.

Our brief encounter w/the parkway, as Tray scrambles to reroute the Zumo

IMGP2344.jpg

Another route was secured and we soldiered on. By the time we got to I40 the skies cleared, but the wind got only worse. It came at us from every direction, your only hint was to watch the trees close by and brace as best you could. I'm ok with strong winds, but prefer they blow from a single constant direction, this however was a game of Russian Roulette and we all had more than enough of this crap. We were glad to exit the interstate and onto hwy74 to/through Waynesville, then to Maggie Valley where we stopped for lunch...good meatloaf.

IMGP2346.jpg

IMGP2347.jpg

With bellies full there was no way the wind could blow us over, so we continued fearless onward and along the Nanahala River where we stopped to watch the kayaks play. The wind started to die, and the hwy along the river made for a nice afternoon ride. Things were looking up.

IMGP2355.jpg

Somewhere along the route we connected w/hwy 68 which would take us straight to Tellico Plains. A nice road...if you like the twisties. Smiles were plentiful within our helmets, could not begin to count the left and right corners, they just came and came one after another and very few cages.

Here is where I must stop for the day. Just let me say, that Don is a very accomplished rider. He has taken every MSF course and has ridden from Mexico to Canada, to California and everywhere in-be-tween.............except for the Cherohala Skyway and the Dragon. When he found out we were planing a trip there he wanted to ride along. Said he had read and heard alot about those places and wanted to experience it for himself, so tomorrow would be his day. At the age of 68 I had some concerns, but Don had proven himself as evidenced by the miles on his odo and his years of riding. Don had mentioned to me during lunch, that in all his years and miles of riding he had experienced 2 first already on this trip. 1 he had never ridden in wind like we had been through that day and 2 his bike had more turns in it the last 2 days than in all the previous years and miles combined. I think in hind sight, Don was starting to tire....wish I had picked up on that....hind sight being 20/20 and all...............well anyway..........

You ever had one of those oh sh*t moments?....................................welp, here is one that would stop up your toilet

It's been fun reading your report, Heidi

Dang Heidi..............looks like the same day I was there.....wasn't 5/11 by chance was it??

Donald, just looked at the calendar. It was 5/10 when we were through there. On Sunday it was really windy all over the east coast. Wasn't just that way for you guys. My mom was really happy when I called her at 3:00 Sunday afternoon to tell her that I was home. (those winds were JUST starting when I was about 50 miles from home) It deteriorated quickly after I got home.

Curious to read about your friend, Don & hope that he's ok. I know firsthand that riding when tired isn't a good thing at all. It really messes w/ your concentration.

Enjoying your report & patiently waiting for more,

Heidi

ummmm.......Dean.........I'm not sure how to answer that ?. Other than maybe we rode a bit more conservative. As a general rule, I seldom ride 5 mph over the speed limit on the interstate. I probably held back the throttle in the twisties a little more than I normally would have since Don was with us, I did not want to just run off and leave him. I noticed on interstate days I was actually getting 50-51 mpg, so I guess since there was so much interstate miles on this trip, maybe that had some over all affect on the average :dntknw:

Welp, those who are following along, I'm sure you have surmized Don's unfortunate event. We had made it to within 5 miles of Tellico Plains, and the curves along 68 had been pretty much predictable, nice, fun, but predictable. The riding order at the time was as follows: Tray in the lead, followed by Mike, then me, then Don and Charles bringing up the tail. We had made it through a typical left curve only to find a quick sharp right to follow, but not a typical hard right, this particular corner dipped in the center followed by a sharp bump and rise after the apex, when I say sharp, I mean you could see the whole curve, the entry and exit as you approached, at best for an average rider, maybe a 15 mph corner. You had to get on the binders pretty good after you came out of the previous/prior corner while on your approach to this nasty little dude.

Tray, Mike and I made it through, but Don was close enough behind me that my first sensory indication of any problem was the crunch and grinding sound I heard...........I knew in an instant. A glance in my 6's confirmed my fear. All I could see was the belly side of Don's Geezerglide sliding across hwy 68 and into the ditch. There was no sign of Don. Just my luck........no shoulders on this road, I had to stop fast, and just pulled over to the right as far as possible, down with the side stand and running back toward Don's bike while jerking off gloves and helmet and yelling his name, but I could not see him anywhere, just his bike on its side, the back half still in the opposing lane and the front half in the shallow ditch. About the time I got to Don's bike, up pops Don from out of the ditch on the other side of his bike, saying I'm alright, I'm alright, help me get my bike up............. typical biker, don't worry about me..........just get my bike up. I told Don to hold on a sec. let me look you over, no blood.......thats good........no protruding bones.........better.........followed by damnit get my bike up.........ok, ok. Well, I think it scared me more than it did Don. Adrenaline was in ample supply. Charles was stopped by now and on the scene, though he said he was far enough behind Don that he had not come out of the previous corner when the accident happened and he did not see it occur. But, with me, Don and Charles there we lifted Don's bike with ease and backed it out of the ditch. Cars had stopped now in both directions. Don simply hopped on his geezerglide, pushed the start and the ole Harley fired right up and Don took off. Left me and Charles standing there in the road. We waived traffic on and found Don's camera in the ditch, picked it up and looked around a bit, then hopped on our bikes and up around the next curve, Tray and Mike and Don were pulled over on a connecting road.

We did not think to go back and look close at the corner and try and figure out how this happened, I guess you don't think as clearly in such situations. Don advised us later that evening, that it seemed to him that his handlebars were suddenly ****** from his hands. I can only surmize maybe his frame bottomed out on the asphalt.......hell I dont know, maybe he got into the curve to fast...whatever..........most importantly he was not injured. Don said his bike did a complete flip, though I did not see that occur, I think he is right given the damage.

When me and Charles caught up to the guy's we all took a bit longer look at Don's bike. It was ridable, but damage was pretty extensive and there was simply no way he could continue on with this trip. So..........Don would have to miss out on the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway, his soul purpose for coming along.

With Tray in the lead, followed by Don and then Mike, then me and lastly Charles, with caution blinkers flashing we limped Don along the last 5 miles to Tellico Plains and the Cherohala MC Resort.

Don's front forks are tweaked a bit, his windshield scraped, seat torn, both hard bags busted and scraped, headlight and passing lights busted, fairing busted all to hell, tank paint chipped, engine guards bent and other various and sundry scrapes and bruises.

IMGP2359.jpg

Most importantly Don was ok and he has good insurance, he has his bike insured for a stated amount along with his custom work. I think the bike will fix and today Don's bike is being repaired :yahoo:

So we all make it to Cherohala MC Resort. This is the second time I have stayed there. Owners Mark and Renee are great people.

Dang look at that barn door on my bike.........it looks huge in that pic.

IMGP2362.jpg

The following morning Renee was already on the phone and had located a Uhaul franchise only 12 miles away in the town of Madisonville. They have a small van truck available for 1 way rental. So, Don hopped on the back of my FJR and I rode him there. He made his way back to Cherohala MC Resort along with a new set of wrachet straps. Mark had a ramp and enough people to load Don's geezerglide into the truck, got it all buckeled down and said good by to Don. Damn!

IMGP2366.jpg

Will pick back up at lunch.

So........

It's Tuesday May 12, our last day in the mountains. Plans for the day originally called for the Dragon Loop, starting in Tellico Plains north on 360 up to 129 and enter the dragon from the back side, then connect to 165/143 (Cherohala Skyway) back to Tellico Plains, then ride down to High Valley MC Resort in Suches GA.

We got Don on his way back home and that took most of our morning, it was already getting close to lunchtime and we still were in Tellico Plains. Time to make another execuative decision, so.........since the remaining 4 of us had ridden the dragon countless times, we decided to skip it this trip and just ride the skyway, then head south to High Valley.

But.............1st things 1st

I had been reading a lot of good things about this suit and one of the largest retail shops which carry it is located in Tellico Plains see here. I wanted to take a closer look and try one on before making such a purchase. I liked what I found, it's a compromise, but I need a cooler suit for summer. It's quite well made, CE armour in critical areas, adjustable and the 2x fit me right off the rack.......I took one home and have been riding with it all week. I got the pewter and high viz. Mike the owner of the shop is a nice guy, if your ever there, you should stop by and ck out his place. He has a nice apparel inventory.

IMGP2368.jpg

Now on to the skyway.........weather was perfect, best day of the trip, regret Don was no longer with us, he would have enjoyed it.

I'll just let the pics do the talking.

IMGP2370.jpg

By the time we made it to Robbinsville NC it was lunch time. We found a diner called Lynns Restaurant. If you ever go there may I suggest you save room for their fried cheesecake w/vanilla ice creme and fresh strawberries and strawberry glaze..........yummy!

IMGP2378.jpg

We slowly flung our bellies over the saddles and continued south to High Valley for our last night.

back again a little later.

Let's see if I can put this ride report to rest.

After our hefty lunch. We motored on to High Valley MC Resort, as recommended by Jwilly. We were not disappointed. The ride in was nice especially hwy180 :yahoo: Upon our arrival however we learned there was nothing anywhere close by insofar as places to eat. All that was available was a local gas station...........which closed within the next hour, better hurry!

Stopped there and loaded up w/hot dogs, buns, chips and beer...........woops...........no beer.........damnit it's a dry county

Good thing Tray had some vodka left............and they did sell OJ...........so things worked out ok after all. Couple interesting guys staying there. A guy named Paul, he hauled his Harley (enclosed trailer---as you might well imagine) all over the country and just went from place to place, camping and riding, been doing it now for years........wow the thought....no work, just ride...Paul's got it figgered out.

Bunkhouses were clean and nice, hot dogs over the camp fire worked well, and we enjoyed a relaxing evening before the next morning 450 mile slab home.

IMGP2379.jpg

We searched long and hard for an alternative route to bypass Atlanta............there is simply none. The next day forecast was for heavy rain headed west  crap just what we needed, look close at the tv screen "Weather Warning"

IMGP2385.jpg

A good nights rest and by morning we were headed S to Atlanta, then the bypass onto I20W. The ride really was not so bad. Mike exited off at his location in B'ham and the remaining 3 of us soldiered on W. No rain........until Lake MS (how appropriate-no pun intended) Good God the rain, 3 drowned rats, but we made it home safe and sound.

Enjoyed most every moment.........cept for Don's mishap.. we could have done without that. Thankfully he's home, doing well and his geezerglide will be repaired soon and he will be heading to Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire later this summer........go Don go!

Good report Donald. I very much enjoyed your pics of the Skyway. I LOVE that road. That is one of my favorite ever. If you're ever back that way, look in on Bald River Falls on a small fire road off of the Skyway. It's beautiful!

Glad to hear that your bud, Don is good to go & nothing is hurt but his bike & pride.

Thanks man!, Heidi

Edited to add: Jeez, there isn't leaves on the trees along the Skyway, yet.

Don just called me, the insurance company has now decided to total the geezerglide :(

He is undecided on buying another bike. I hope he does, I hate the thought of my ride with him being his last. :eek:hwell:
