I found a way to change both headlights in less than 45 seconds. Can you figure it out?


Reach in, remove the black boots. EzPz.


Undo the retaining clips.


Surprisingly enough, the Ultras have 5 hours more of life than the regular SilverStars.

I'm replacing the 'blue bulb' back with one that has more white color.

Reinstall clip.


Reinstall the boots.


Thoroughly impress the cat with your incredible wrenching skills.

The end.

Note where the gold bar on the right and the horizontal bar at the bottom of the chart intersect. Them bulbs wuz real bright, right up until they went dark ;)

 
145 hours?

With as much riding as I do, it looks like I would have to replace them every 1-2 months - no thanks.

According to the first image text on the package,

Sylvania guarantees your complete satisfaction for up to 12 months from date of purchase.
That potentially means you could keep getting free replacement bulbs if you ride more than 145 hours per year with your low beams on. So how often are you willing to change your headlight bulbs?

Personally, I like to use the Osram Rallye 70/65w +50 H4 bulb 64205 in my vehicles. The Osram Rallye 64205 produces more light than any standard 60/55w bulb: 2000/1350 lumen, high/low beam (at 13.2V).

I see you have almost the same tank holdup tool that I have. I got the deluxe model with 2 nails in one end to go into the tank hold-down bolt holes so it doesn't slip. How much did you pay for yours? :)

To make the bulb replacement easier 145 hours down the road when the bulbs are much less accessible, I'd highly suggest putting some grease (I use dielectric grease) on the boots so that they pop off and on easier when you're fumbling with your finger tips in the dark. ;)

I used a couple of pieces of bamboo kebab skewers glued into two appropriately spaced holes in the end of my super-deluxe tank holdup 2X4. I only use it to hold the tank long enough so I can attach a small rachet strap, with a loop of soft cord around the tank tab, connected to the tail rack.

The boot grease is an excellent tip. I smeared a little ACF-50 on 'em.

I also put a small zip tie just below the knurled fitting on each of the headlight adjuster cables, to keep the dratted things from sliding down when I'm trying to thread them onto the knobs on the inside of the panels during reassembly.
