I just got back from having the 4500 mile service done on the bike. You know the one.....$12.00 worth of oil, 4 no name spark plugs, and a couple of new quick fasteners. $436.85. No thats not a typo. $287.00 in labor alone. Made me want to go tear the "I Love NY" bumper sticker off my cage. Evidently I am going to have to start doing this crap myself, as if I don't have enough other **** to do in my life. So lets see, $327.00 for the 600 mile service and $436.85 for the 4500 mile service adds up to what? 2 speeding tickets on the BRP going to EOM? A new Garmin? A whole lotta stuff I don't need but would buy anyway? 350 six packs of Schmidts for all my drinking friends? Its only money right?

Like, y'know, its not all that hard to raise the tank, replace the sparky plugs, do a throttle body synch, drain the oil and change the filter. A little lithium grease on the clutch and brake levers, lube the brake pedal pivot and shifter pivots. I guess I should look up what is supposed to be done @ 4500 miles (maybe check the air filter if you live in a dusty area), but I think I'm in the ballpark.

That is RIDICULOUS! I bought a 3 year / unlimited schedule service maintenance contract for my FJR1300AE for $1000! I have already done two services & I am almost ready for the 8,000 mile!

Best Regards,

Shane

Axe, that's insane...

Yeah, there's not much to it... Save your $ for when there's something really wrong that needs to be done. Regular maintenance is easy. If you can change the oil, you can sync the throttle bodies and change the spark plugs.

Now, the valve adjust, that's going to be time intensive, but even that isn't rocket science.

That $436 could a bought you one hell of a nice set of Craftsman tools on sale. B) Hell that dealer is into you now for over $700 for what you could have done in 3 hours tops. (maybe 4 if it's the first time you've done any of it). It's all well documented on line and you know there are plenty of people around willing to help out too.

****, you can learn how to do the TBS at EOM. What more do you need?

I've been putting off doing my own tires but I'm about to jump into that mess as well, it doesn't take too many sets to get your money back on a decent changer.

WOW After seeing those prices I guess my local dealer is treating me VERY WELL! I think I only paid around $90 for my 600 mile service and around $100 for my 4000 mile service (I'd have to look up excatly what the costs were but those are ballpark). :dribble:

My stealer wanted $450 to buy and mount 2 Avons. Those people are nuts. I'll do it myself. Besides, I don't trust anyone to mess with it anyway.

You would be referring to New York City there Bounce.....New York is also a state....

Axeman,

We really should get together. You got hosed on your service. Being a fellow LI resident, I never go near the service department. I've done everything myself on my '05, and am way more confident in what I did versus the ham handed service departments that are out there in NY. The only thing I've had done is a tire change, and they went and put 10 weights on the wheel! I didn't have access to a tire changer, but will in the future.

I needed to bleed my brakes and was thinking of bringing it in again, since it is the brakes here, and they are ABS. Instead, I bought a MightyVac, and did it myself. I learned a bit, and saved some cash in the process. What galls me the most is that the dealer charges a premium price for service, and doesn't do it any better than anyone could do on their own.

Next time you need your FJR serviced, PM me and we'll hook up.

DG,

I appreciate the offer and am going to take you up on it at some point. I don't necessarily mind doing this myself but I also don't want my learning curve to end up costing me a non-functioning bike and a boatload of aggravation. It always helps when I can see someone else do something for the first time. Thats probably why every service department has a big "No Customers in Service Area" sign posted. If everyone saw how easy it was they wouldn't have any customers.

+1 on DG's offer,

I too am on L.I. and if you ever need a hand w/ anything give me a shout. I have all the tools and garage to do anything you need. I will be doing front brakes one night this week before I leave foe EOM. If you want to come by and see how it is done.

Tim
