Looks like fun W2. Both days will be long days in the saddle. IMO you're pushing day 2 ride to taking in scenery and do those miles on those roads. I'd get stuck in Yosemite for the day. Doing both passes will take a while not stopping for shots.
Enjoy, and ride safe.
Hey Simon. I hear you. I'm looking at trimming off some miles between Yosemite & the 108. Something like this.

A couple of us did the 50 from Tahoe to Sacramento last October and got through in Saturday traffic in decent time (1.2 hrs maybe). But we were riding for time (SS1K) and not enjoyment. Maybe 2 hrs per leg...is that reasonable? Drive time shows 1.5 hrs per.

Does anyone have a favorite overnight spot near the 49 between Angel's Rest & Mokelumne Hill maybe?

W2, so many roads, so little time off. I'd love to take some time off to show you a few local haunts...
Next time then! 26 looks like a winner. We'll try to get it at the start of day 3. Thanks...

Cheers,

W2

IIRC from last week, it's 45 in most of the twisty areas. 55 on stretches from Oakhurst to Mariposa but the CHP is strong on Radar coming out of Oakhurst so be wary. Between Jackson and 120, it was clogged with 35 mph drivers and that was on a Tuesday afternoon at about 1:30. Not to mention the CHP that was in front of us by 5 cars for many, many miles through one stretch. Damn, that was a nightmare but we were wearing our water-soaked cooling gear at that point.
Just drop a Google street view onto some section of 49 and look for the signs.

I don't see how I can add much to what you've got here already, Willy. I recently crossed thru Yosemite on 120 (Tuolumne Meadows via Tioga Pass) and did 108 from 395 on the return leg--the first time I've taken that road. I was KNOCKED OUT! 108 was just FUN. Twisties, gorgeous views, steep climbs and descents, more gorgeous views, and very, VERY light traffic. Didn't see a single CHP either, but you'd better not take that as a guarantee. :) I did it west-to-east but now I want to go back and try the other direction. (The western 40-50 miles of the road between Sonora and 395 is the really gorgeous part.)

As to 26, it's a great, fun road too, but CAJW was right; too many good choices to ever worry about having to nail down one "best" ride in those parts. I can't recommend anyplace to stay up that way; too close to home. The wife and I did have a nice stay at a B&B in Quincy a few years back though, if you get up that way. I recommend that area as well, but if you decide to try the Quincy-LaPorte Road, contact Old Michael (he knows a special short-cut). Once you leave the Sac-Tahoe corridor (50 or 80), or get away from Yosemite and the Hwy 49 tourists, the roads are much much more open. As to Tahoe-Sac on 50, though, an hour and a half is a very reasonable estimate, at least on an FJR.

Just curious,

How many days are you looking to be gone, how many miles a day, what size group. I put together a ride in the same area last year that was quite fun.

Today, it's a 3 or 4-day activity with the last day being an orderly retreat back to the LA area...maybe down 395. We will be 4 or 5 strong on the outward leg.

Cheers,

W2

Hope your not going this week-going to be really HOT. If you are riding 395 home may I suggest riding Hwy 120 East from 395 to Benton where you can jump on 6(faster but boring) down to Bishop or use the Benton cut off road (Fun)back to 395.

This section of Hwy 120 is a blast! Wick it up and have fun over the woops! If you ride it you will know of what I speak.

Wee Willy,

This ride seems to be developing nicely.........maybe I can tag along.

I'll be tuned in for further details.

The heats getting turned up some now inland.

A cooler coastal return route sounds tempting.

Let's keep the buzz going on this
