I did this run back in November 2007. It was my first IBA attempt of any sort. Biggest thing that I learned was that you make your time during your stops. Total time: 42 hrs 34 mins. I did the whole run staying within 10mph of the speed limit or less.

I had plenty of time to spare, and I wish I would have planned my sleep stop better. I passed up a couple hotels thinking I'd catch one at the next exit on the edge of San Antonio. I ended up riding almost to Seguin, TX before I found a hotel.

My stops were all right about 3hrs apart; gas, food, water. I never dropped below 3/4's of a tank. Roll in, drink fluids while fueling, eat chow while walking into the restroom, pick up chow for next stop, rolling. If I did it again, I'd practice the routine some more.

And music; music took away the boredom of being in the saddle.

Good luck.

Which coast are you starting from? I am assuming the west coast since you are from UT. I am considering this as my first LDR on the FJR, and killing 4 birds with one stone LOL. BTW before anyone flames me, I used to be a truck driver for 10 years so I'm fairly knowledgeable about racking up some miles. It will be interesting to plan this trip on the bike, I'm sure there will be differences but white line fever is white line fever!

I just checked the total mileage from Little Rock, AR to Jacksonville, FL to San Diego, CA back to LR.

Almost 5000 miles.

I got out of trucking because of the mind numbing boredom and here I am considering doing the same thing without being paid for it even!

Am I crazy for even considering this!?!?!?

Not sure I want an answer to that LOL

Sorry not trying to hijack your thread, I think this is a good idea for someone that has driven long distances before. Not sure that I would try it as my first LDR though.

I believe you have to have had an IB ride before attempting this per IBA site.

I did this last March ! Bright lights across west tejas & warm gear were key for me. Bought some hunters foot warmers that are air activated to stick on top of my sox (toes) to keep my feet warm. I put in a lot of seat time getting my body programmed ahead of time & kept plenty of food & snacks in my tank bag to eat while underway. A gallon or half gallon jug of water with a camelbak hose/valve will keep the fluids coming. Be sure & get gas on the East side of El Paso as it's a long ways to the nexr stop. I used Loop 375 to bypas El Paso Traffic. Try to use as much of the Car Pool lane as possible in Houston & beware of carpool lane that drops you into downtown Houston . Also use Hwy 12 around New Orleans . I did this without extra gas but it would've been nice to have had my aux tank during this. I wanted to miss the rain & low morning temps west of San Antonio so my rest stop was in Seguin TX. I spent 7 hrs ina hotel & still finished in under 44 hrs.

Let me know if I can help in any way . . . .

There is some good info & gas stop planning map/ weather stuff on the Motorcycle Tourers Forum . . .

I went to Daytona bike week & down to Orlando for a few days after.

I wouldn't considered this ride if they wouldn't let you but their site says you can:

Other notes...Several riders have also opted to combine both the SaddleSore 1000 and/or Bun Burner 1500 with this attempt. If you decide to include the SaddleSore or Bun Burner as part of your ride, you do NOT have to get witnesses at the end of the 24 hour period.

You are right, I cannot find a prerequisite for this ride. I started with MTF group & they required it, not IBA, my mistake. Your quote just means you can also do those rides while doing this one. JMO but truck driving has no direct correlation to bike riding this type of distance. You need long distance riding experience (ie time in saddle) . I prepared a lot & rode about 6k in the months just before my attempt. I ws so prepared it was fairly easy & have had a rougher time on a SS. If you've never done a SS you might want to try one before you commit to this type of time/money to see if it's for you.

I have gone on a couple of longer trips (more than just in state 400mi trips) and even without many farkles it was doable. I love to ride and I ride about 2000 miles a month easy without any long trips as the motorcycle is my primary means of transportation. I ride rain or shine, we don't get much snow here so I can ride year round. I could probably do a SS before next spring but I have already made a trip that was pretty close to that with no problems, other than waiting for my cousin on his cruiser and small gas tank :( If I had known about it I probably could have used that trip but I didn't know I was going to be doing this LDR stuff then.

I know that taking long trips on the bike will be different in some ways than driving truck but the planning and execution are almost exactly the same, other than the fact that I am paying to do this and not getting paid to do it :)

Thanks for all the information! I really appreciate it.

One question...

If we are doing the 50cc and are leaving from the West Coast and headed toward the East Coast, does IBA take into consideration the timezone changes when calculating the 50 hours?

You have 50 hours from the start time of your starting location. I did the 100CCC back a few years back. Started from SD out I 8 & 10. Many riders going eastbound stop for a 4-6 rest at Junction Tx, west of Houston. A group of motels right off the I -10. When you hit New Orleans take I-12 which is north of the Lake Poncatran and avoid I-10 which is much slower as it goes right through the center of the downtown area. Make sure you study well the routes to Jacksonville Beach FL when you get in Jacksonville, I had a bit of a problem with finding it.

Good luck on your ride. if I can be helpful with starting you and signing off your start, let me know.

Miss seeing you since you moved north.

Dave, that would be VERY COOL sir! The plan is leaving Feb 28th, don't have the time nailed down yet but I'll check in with you mid February to see if you can make it. Thanks!!
