LEAVENWORTH, Wash. — LEAVENWORTH, Wash. -- A Saturday morning fire destroyed the beloved 59er Diner in Leavenworth, known for its milkshakes, 50's memorabilia and old-fashioned feel.
Flames and heavy smoke were seen billowing out of the restaurant near Coles Corner and Highway 2 as firefighters battled the blaze.
Locals say people have come from all over the world to see and experience the diner.
"It's a special place you know, a very happy place, it's a very friendly place," said owner Joe Cannata. "Everybody loves it, you can feel it when you go in the door."
Online, customers raved about the funky, 50s-style diner's décor, that included old photos, LIFE magazine covers and Christmas tree ornaments hanging from the roof. They also recalled their bacon cheeseburgers and tall milkshakes.
"It's the old toastmaster toaster and the old blender that your grandmother had. There's just all kinds of little knick-knacks," said Cannata. "Things that remind your of being at grandma's or being at mom's and it all feels good."
"It's definitely a fixture of this community," added Leavenworth resident Jill Crimmins. "We've looked at all the pictures on the wall, the jukebox, the memorabilia, all of it. It's really sad for us."
The owner is vowing to rebuild and continue to restaurant's legacy.
"There's been a lot of tears today with a lot of people," said Cannata. "But, we'll look on the bright side and we'll get to work putting a brand new 59er Diner together."
Unfortunately, the Washington State Patrol says the building is a total loss. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
"It's a good place and we'll put it back together and we'll make it happy and good again," said Cannata.
