LEAVENWORTH, Wash. — LEAVENWORTH, Wash. -- A Saturday morning fire destroyed the beloved 59er Diner in Leavenworth, known for its milkshakes, 50's memorabilia and old-fashioned feel.

Flames and heavy smoke were seen billowing out of the restaurant near Coles Corner and Highway 2 as firefighters battled the blaze.

Locals say people have come from all over the world to see and experience the diner.

"It's a special place you know, a very happy place, it's a very friendly place," said owner Joe Cannata. "Everybody loves it, you can feel it when you go in the door."

Online, customers raved about the funky, 50s-style diner's décor, that included old photos, LIFE magazine covers and Christmas tree ornaments hanging from the roof. They also recalled their bacon cheeseburgers and tall milkshakes.

"It's the old toastmaster toaster and the old blender that your grandmother had. There's just all kinds of little knick-knacks," said Cannata. "Things that remind your of being at grandma's or being at mom's and it all feels good."

"It's definitely a fixture of this community," added Leavenworth resident Jill Crimmins. "We've looked at all the pictures on the wall, the jukebox, the memorabilia, all of it. It's really sad for us."

The owner is vowing to rebuild and continue to restaurant's legacy.

"There's been a lot of tears today with a lot of people," said Cannata. "But, we'll look on the bright side and we'll get to work putting a brand new 59er Diner together."

Unfortunately, the Washington State Patrol says the building is a total loss. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

"It's a good place and we'll put it back together and we'll make it happy and good again," said Cannata.

"Toaster and blender like your Grandmother had" my foot. It sounds like stuff I had. Hey, wait a minute . . .

Always a shame to lose a classic place like this sounds like it was. Sorry I missed it.

I'll miss the diner even though I was only introduced to it early last summer. Good food and a great place to relax on the way to Leavenworth and the Big V cafe closer to Cashmere for pie.

Dayum! Sad to hear about this! I vividly recall my last trip there. I'd just finished riding over Dave's KTM Adventure mere hours before with my Yamaha Super Tenere.

That place rocked. The milkshakes alone were worth the trek!

...which reminds me...I need to find a diner nearby...

They were talking to the owner on the local radio this morning. He's overwhelmed by the outpouring of local support. Said it is insured and is planning on rebuilding. He still has the othet location in the antique mall in Cashmere.

That's so sad. Sheila and I stayed overnight this past January in the Roy Rogers Cabin and had a huge breakfast the next morning before skiing at Stevens that day.

All the waitresses were named Flo. It was the running joke there. This particular morning we were served by a young girl in training. Her name tag read FL. I asked why and she said she had not earned her "O" yet. Fun place, lovely people. Hope they rebuild but how do you replace all the memorabilia?

Drove by there Sunday morning. Just a pile of charred walls. So sad, I'm sure this year is a total write off. :(
