Well I did the 600 mile service today. Got a thumbs up on most every thing. TB in spec, Cables lubed, oil was clean ( did the initial change at 80 miles) rear diff was clean. BUT, My drive spline was (more or less) dry. The tech said "it looked like they were scared to lube it" just a VERY thin film of lithium. Prob solved now though.

Total bill $177.11 ($63. for pulling spline)

Pay the extra and have your splines checked! Its been said before and I'm glad I did.

Thank you to the Forum!

I lubed the splines and the u joint before Crystal turned a mile. There is only 4 bolts that hold the differential to the shaft. The sooner the better. TJ

I guess I should feel lucky then, as they "took off" the 60 bucks for the spline lube, because they agreed with me that it was improperly done in the first place and I should not have to pay for it..

Mine were under lubed also. Just got back from the 600 mile service. Everyone in the shop was in agreement. Yamaha under lubes there splines on all there models.

I asked the service mgr to see about re-imbursing me for the lube job but he said it was a grey area "routine maintenance" so I let it go

I haven't worried too much about the shaft splines, I'll check them when I put on a new rear tire. I'm riding the crap out of the bike, with a bit over 3k on it after a month in the saddle, so the tires will be due quick.

Nobody's mentioned the steering head bearings. I think they're in the 600 mile check list also. Mine feels quite a bit looser than it did when I rode it out with zero miles. I plan to order the spanner, so will wait to check it until after I have it in hand.

Hey FJRFencer,

Where did you decide to get your service done? PPS or the dealer where you purchaced it?

Just curious.

Purchasing Dealer because

1. I was able to make an appointment rather than drop it off and see when I would get it back

2 D&H was 8 weeks out on service

3 PPS wanted 175 before I even enquired about the splines.

Looks like Yamaha factory techs still aren't correctly lubing splines on the '06 bikes. Amazing that they can't get this right.

The lube is mostly to keep the splines from rusting, there is very little movement where the splines enter the u-joint. That is why there is very little grease in this area. Just my 2 cents.

If this thin amount of grease concerns you, lube away. We all know Yamaha engineers, technicians and assembly line workers are idiots and have no idea what they are doing. :p :p :p
