i called my local dealer to do the tb synch portion of the 600 mile check. the service manager said he's booked for a week, and that since i'd already changed all oils/filters and documented it, i was good to go as long as i documented the other checks and services due...

then he floored me with the following:

"those fjr's are BULLETPROOF as long as you keep the fluids changed and the inspections current."

wahoo!!!

I called D&H to schedule my 600 mile service. They said they could not do it for 6 to 7 weeks. The price given was $112 + parts (oil and filter) so i guess the $150 is about right if it included parts. A dealer closer to me than D&H wanted $150 + parts.

Everyone give me your ******** Er I mean opinions :D

I called my dealer (not D&H) and asked their price from the service (600) The service manager said as he flipped through the book " it looks like a lot of checking stuff out plus an oil change... I'd guess around $30-40 + parts" I spoke with the service manager when I picked up my bike and he seems like a nice intelligent man. BUT and its a big BUTT, This is only the second FJ to come through this dealer and the first was an 03. The service manager said he had never seen one before uncrating mine. SOOO Do I let a man with general knowledge in bikes touch my bike because I am sure he would do it BY THE BOOK STEP BY STEP as he has as much experience with it as I do (with the exception he has a book.. Hey Dallara where are those Chinese writings of yours when I need them :D ) or do I wait on D&H and their experience?

I mean apart from looking at cables and the air filter you change the oil (which I did after I got home from an 80 mile delivery run so initial metal particals should already be gone) and a throttle boby sinc. Right?

OK. Took my bike in this morning at 9:30 am and they called me back at noon to say it was done(After I told them I was going out of town and they could keep the bike till Weds.) .The $96.00 dollar price did not include oil and filter..(($29.00))..I asked them to check the spline lube...They wrote it up as an extra $33.00 on the bill, but took it off. Because:

The splines did have lube on them, but they said it appeared to be white lithium grease..not a Moly grease. They said they lubed the shaft itself also and the front splines. So my $160.00 dollar bill was reduced to $128.00.

They said they did not change the oil in the final drive, as I said I would do this myself, having a bottle of synthetic gear oil at home that I prefer.

They memtioned they did not as of yet, get any "updates" from Yamaha about the spline lube...but I would suggest all those noticing the lack or diminished amount of lube on their splines send a note to Yamaha about it..

Bike runs great.

If you want it done right have dealer do it! Cost should be no object!

Here is what I have done> oil, filter, drive gear oil at 800 mi.> Repeated every 2000-2500mi. oil+filter, drive gear oil every other. Lubed splines at tire changes (2 times-they won't turn to dust ) radiator juice, and fork oil when springs changed, and relubed shock linkage when wilbers installed. 13,500 mi. later >It runs like the day I picked it up (Great) and Total maintenance cost not including tires= apox. $150. P.S. I know I'am going to hell on a bananna peel, But I've used the Same crush washer 7 times and no oil leak. :)

When I picked up my bike today I asked the D&H Mechanics about the drive splines coming from the factory without enough lube. They said that the lube in there is fine and nothing will break or prematuely wear out with the lube in there. They said to wait until I change the tires to have it them re-lubed.

It could be worse - we could be Harley owners and need a phase 1, 2 . or 3 modification to make our rides just keep up with the traffic.
