There was a recent Traffic Safety study done in Wash DC, Toronto, Winnipeg and Edmonton, all of which use the Red Light camera's. Accident rates increased by 57% and fatalities by 17% after the camera's were in service. The report recommended lenghtening the yellow light interval to allow traffic to safely stop or clear the intersections...... Nope.. Cuts into revenues

Yeah but the cameras don't really cause the accidents. Tailgating causes the accidents.

Truth is, yellow light means stop if you can reasonably do so, not hurry up and get into the intersection. Why is everybody in such a damn hurry?

... owner received the ticket in the mail, only way out was to swear you weren't driving the vehicle and identify who was (who would then get the ticket).
I wonder what would happen if everyone who received a ticket from one of these automated devices simply swore that the Mayor must have been driving their cars at the time, because the owners weren't ????? :)

Wait until the new cars come equipped with GPS and a ticket printer. As soon as you violate, your ticket spits itself out of the dash.

DOT handbook in the 3 states I've lived in says, yellow="slow down and prepare to stop."

NOT the same thing as a red and never meant to be. Therefore: yellow!=stop

Here in N.Y.C (the 5 boros) its like the NEW WORLD ORDER there looking at you everywhere you go cameras on street corners , all bridges , 80 percent of tolls booths take your photo when you go by . then theres the red light stuff all over staten island . and the e z pass system which scans a small box on your windsheild so you can pay tolls with out stopping .Also the advantage of this is a very large discount for the toll. example the verrazzano bridge is 9 bucks wirh ez pass its $3.80 . THERE WATCHING US . No i do not smoke pot . maybe a little herion now and then .

So if you didn't have a radar detector the only other way to avoid the ticket (other than being lucky enough for the pic to have some technical flaw) was to go by at the same time as another car travelling in the same direction so that the camera snapped a pic of both cars and plates - the system couldn't identify which one was the speeder.

Does anyone else remember the story from Australia where some kids distracted the guy in the photo radar van while some other kids stole the van's license plate? Then they put the plate on their car and sped past the van a whole bunch of times. Man was that funny! :clapping:

Here's an abstract of a meta-analysis of the data on red light cameras at this site

Abstract

Red light running is a significant cause of accidents at signalised intersections. A primary countermeasure for red light running accidents is automatic enforcement with the aid of red-light cameras. Over the years, many evaluations of camera effectiveness have been published as well as numerous anecdotal reports, but there is a lack of summary values of effects associated with the camera application. This study reviewed international findings from Australia, USA, Great Britain, Singapore and other countries which showed large reductions in violation rates at camera sites or on camera approaches, of the order of 40-60%. A meta-analysis of these effects showed that the introduction of cameras results, on average, in an 18% reduction in injury accidents at the treated intersections. The reduction effect is greater in accidents generated by conflicting vehicle movements, whereas the injury accidents with vehicles moving in the same direction generally increased following camera installation. The average reduction in total accidents, including injury and 'property damage only' accidents, is low. The estimated effects were consistent across the various parts of the analysis.

Some of the Sun Pass lanes here in S. Fla. have radar to indicate your entry speed. They already have cameras that get you if a Pass does not register. I often am over the posted limit through the Pass lane (like most everyone else) and I keep expecting to get a performance award in the mail with a photo of my bike and the radar display but it hasn't happened yet. Gonna be a ***** if they start enforcing the limit because it is common to see vehicles going through WAY over the posted 25 MPH at the booth where they have the radar.

Hmmm seems to me since the Brits don't have guns thay have resorted to fire. A new sport has been born. Instead of skiing and stopping to place a nice group in a target you ride till your detector and gps data have aquired the target then from out of range of the camera you place your nice group of hollowpoints. Not recommended of course in highly populated areas
