I am getting ready to do the 8k service, and the bike is running great too. I question to need to swap the plugs at 8k (In light of Fred's Plug thread and Johnny getting almost 30k out of his stock ones) and do the throttle bodies sync. Do most do it ? I was going to wain until the 12 Oil change , and at 8k just do the oil and in honor of the BMW final drives swap the fluid in that . The book calls for a bi-annual swap of clutch and brake fluids, however, as the PNW tends to be soggy , I was wondering if it not better to swap it every year. Thoughts?

Go with the service manual recommendations. But if you wait a few thousand miles nothing should fall off. Many have found some parts like the rear pumpkin need attention sooner, rather than later, but if you follow service recommendations the warranty stays intact. A lot depends on your comfort level. I'm absolutely sure others will give other opinions. YMMV, my 2 cents worth, yada yada.

At 30,000, I put in new plugs that had gone 22,000 miles, and did the bike's first ever TBS. The bike ran great before but afterwards, the slight vibrations I noticed at 4,000 rpm was completely gone. So, your choice; do what you want. No harm if you do the minimum, and you might gain a little something if you do the work.

Interesting question about replacing hyd fluid more often if living in wet climate. I would think so. If nothing else, it's a low dollar low maintenance item easily done. I'd do it.

Low dollar?

Perhaps
However flushing out the clutch fluid on an AE requires dropping the swing arm to access the manual tweak screw. You also need to put an indicator on the clutch basket to measure the throw.

I plan to post my results when I accomplish this within the next few weeks.

Brodie

I agree with Brodie, it is not as easy on the FJR AE and with ABS. More "stuff" to deal with and get in the way too. I have since living in the PNW changed it every year on other bikes. Brake and clutch fluid , since it is very hygroscopic and inevitably absorbs water, can contribute to corrosion in the bike.

changed my stock plugs at 12,500, they looked great. Put in iridium plugs; bike worked the same.

throttle body sync, well we all have our stories. mine:

had never been done, was at a tech day demo somewhere around 15,000 miles - and my bike was a demo for the TB sync.

tech said it was the worst he'd ever seen in out of balance, yeah the manometors were not even at all.

adjusted even, rode home, again couldn't tell the difference. Later was told the TB sync only does separate small idle,

so once you open up the throttle the TB idle inequalities become minor with all the power gas flowing in.

haven't done TB since, now 52,000.

Personally, I've never had brake probs., but it doesn't rain as much down here. Two year intervals have worked fine. And I should add my spark plugs changed at 12,000 and 30,000 were fine as well.

I'd say you are right on target with your mileage/maintenace. Also, living in the PNW your thoughts on hydraulic fluid are appropriate. I change my oil about every 2k and the final drive every 4k (I own a BMW also). I take it to the dealer annually for the 12k service for plugs and TBS and to make sure I meet any Y.E.S. requirements.
