This guy's story is crazy. I watched a special on his story on the locked up abroad series on discovery. He went through a lot of ****, then at the end of it all, chooses to finish his ride, instead of going home!

clicky

I read the book. Definitely a good read. Highly recommend it. I think he did the right thing by continuing, but then again my wife tells me I'm a crazy fooker.

Wow! That's one heck of a story there. I'm amazed they let him go. Even more amazed he didn't need to go to the hospital when he was released, and totally amazed he decided to finish his ride.

I read the book too.

I learned that if I'm ever in Columbia and captured by the FARC I learned how to make myself bleed to encourage sympathy.

Okay.... I'm part Colombian (note the two O's BTW :p ). My mother was born in Colombia, and I spent 4 years there as a kid when my dad worked on a hydro dam project in the boonies. Of course that was before all the BS down there. Anyway, let me just say, he rode into Medellin? Dumb f**k. <_<

I've got a friend who read The Motorcycle Diaries, and has been plying me to take a ride to the tip of South America, ever since (he's too lame to ride to Galveston, much less Peru).

Yet another 'kidnapped U.S. national in South America' story, good for countering the idea.

I didn't lose anything in South America, so I'll pass on going to look for it.

hah, yeah, i read it, too.

note to self: learn how to shove metal object up nose and whack self in face before traveling thru politically unstable countries.

+1
However, there is some amazing scenery in Central and South America. Much of it is found off road, tho.

Totally different points of view in ADVrider are Jean-Luc's Chasing Summer posts and Bannaman's trip as well.

Chasing Summer is worth is just for the pics. Oh, he starts his trip to South America by going to Alaska.

ADVrider is a different type of forum, you guys are WAY more intellectual.
