I recently took a few days to ride down and meet the SWFOG gang

in Page and do a little riding with them.

Then I lingered in Southern Utah for a couple of days, rode down to Las Vegas,

and then up through Nevada and home.

I'd been through the area a few times before, but if you like riding a motorcycle,

it's a place a fellow could happily spend a lot of time exploring. So I did.

Here then, is my picture report of the ride.

I left Sacramento in the wee hours Friday morning, having had to work the day before,

and therefore not being able to join the SWFOG happening when it began on Thursday.

I probably didn't miss much.

All they do is drink and smoke cigars and pick on civilized folk.

My first fill-up, before heading up the mountain and into Nevada.

By the way, there'll be a LOT of pictures in this report.

I'm really fond of Highway 50 through the Silver State.

Most everyone has seen plenty of photos of this stretch.

But here are a couple more. Somewhere on the "Loneliest Road".

(You can stop out here, and often sit for long periods without another vehicle coming by.)

My first day was all about making time, so I didn't do much stopping.

Got to Cedar City, in southern Utah, checked into a motel, and rested up in preparation

for meeting the "boys" the next morning for a ride through Zion.

Oh, the anticipation.

KFC and a couple of brews in the room, and I was dead to the world by sundown.

IMG_5029.jpg

Day TWO!

Up at dawn, a hearty breakfast at IHOP, and on the road.

I rode east on 14 (my first of what would be three runs over this stretch in the next few days)...

Nice sky I think.

IMG_5033.jpg

...to Long Valley Junction, then down 89 to Mt. Carmel Junction.

There I waited for the SW Effers to arrive...

IMG_5035copy.jpg

They were late. Probably hung over.

Very good seeing some old friends, and finally meeting some other folks.

Beemerdons gathered everyone, said some swear words, ........

IMG_5039.jpg

...and we were off to see the sights! Here are a bunch of pictures I took of our ride.

Not all in order. (Some of these were lifted from my disk, and posted elsewhere already.

Sorry. There'll be litigationing.)

"Don't look. Are they still behind us?"

Lots of folks out riding these parts.

IMG_5165.jpg

Oh, please...

IMG_5188.jpg

Stopped for lunch at a little place that serves buffalo stuff. "Everything but the hump."

IMG_5485.jpg

Don had staked it out.

Leave it to a Robusto. Lucy Lu waits patiently.

IMG_5497.jpg

I had only iced tea, as I'd just eaten a big breakfast, but the food looked delicious. The poor fellow

who ran the place was by himself, and we overwhelmed him I think. But he hustled through,

and got everyone fed.

It was good getting to know some of the guys. What a bunch. :D

IMG_5486.jpg

After Zion and lunch, it was back up to Cedar City, in the bright midday sun ....

IMG_5209.jpg

...and back over the mountains, through the autumn countryside.

Lotsa left turns, huh?

Then down to Kanab, out across the desert, and back to Page for dinner at the Marriott.

I'll refer y'all to some of the other SWFOG ride reports for pics of the evening's festivities.

After an excellent dinner, and dispensing of swag,

(I won some valve stems from BikeEffects! Thanks Jeff!), a good many of the

attendees migrated to room 106, where Niehart was running an illicit bar and cigar orgy.

Just one photo of the horrors there.

IMG_5347.jpg

Scary ****, isn't it?

Day THREE.

By the time I stumbled from my room the next morning, the parking lot was almost empty of bikes.

SWFOG was over. Now I had a few days to wander and take photos. Gonna be great.

IMG_5742-1.jpg

I'll get that part done tomorrow. Some really neat stuff.

Thanks for taking the time so far. 'night.

As always OM, good stuff.

He was gone before the birds chirped Sunday morning. I sure like the old bas#*rd, but for the life of me, can't figure out why....

Now about that crack :ermm:

Wow!!!

awesome stuff all the way around. great sites, great roads, good folks

Thanks for sharing, and nice to see a few familiar faces, ugly, but familiar ;-)

Man the more Ride reports I read from SWFOG the more I wish I had ditched my family and come. :) It looked like a great time. I, and most likely the pillion wife will definately be at SWFOG-10 in Taos!

Who's custom painted silver/blue FJR is that in the pics? Me likey!

Michael, once again you make the rest of us envy and appreciate your skilz with a camera. Wonderful shots. A few thoughts:

Who's the pillion in one of the last pics? Looks like some skinny-assed forum member in drag -- Skooter maybe?

I thought I was the only one that appreciated the solitude of Rte. 50, good road to stop and hear the quiet. :good:

Louis L'Amour or Clement Salvadori would be proud of your wanderlust and love of the land.

Keep them coming man!

:clapping:

But who are all those old gray farts you ride with?
Yeah, you would NOT have fit in Don. You're too young and feral virile.

Oookay, den.

On with the report.

I'd gotten up Sunday morning -later than I've gotten up in years- and was dismayed to find that

all of my fellow Feejerites had departed, without any hugs or goodbyes. *******s.

Now I didn't feel bad about peeing on all those fenders the night before.

As I was about to start loading up my wickedly fast '06, good old Marcusorelius and his

little buddy Duke pulled up.

IMG_5353.jpg

As we chatted, every passing female came scurrying over to

squeal that Duke and his goggles "were the most adorable thing" and blah, blah, blah.

I'm guessing that mutt is getting Marcusorelius laid at least twice a week.

I've gotta rig something up on my bike.

Hmmmm????

Winter project.

So, after breakfast, I was off to see what I could see.

I headed south from Page on 89, into the cool morning air of Northern Arizona. When I stopped to get

a shot of a cool gap through the hills, I was delighted to see Al (feeger on our forum) roll up. He'd gotten

a late start as well, and we decided to ride together for a bit.

IMG_5543.jpg

We continued on down the road to Bitter Springs, and then turned back on Alt. 89 toward Jacob Lake.

IMG_5371.jpg

Of course we hadda stop at the Navajo Bridge and look at the Colorado below.

IMG_5544.jpg

Wait a minute. Let me zoom in there!

IMG_5547copy.jpg

A long, strange trip.

At Jacob Lake, Al and I parted ways. He was heading down to view the North Rim, and I was continuing

northwest to Fredonia and eventually up around Bryce Canyon NP, and my reserved campsite at

Kodachrome Basin State Park.

On the way, I veered from my route to check out Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park.

Kinda neat. You wouldn't want to get pink sand down in your britches, ...because it's pink, and

then...

IMG_5561.jpg

I enjoyed the leisurely ride north, following 89 until I was able to turn back east on 12.

Only stopped when something caught my eye. If I coulda bungied this gal to my bike,

I'd have taken her camping with me. :D

IMG_5571.jpg

Through Red Canyon.

IMG_5581.jpg

Stopped in Cannonville to grab a sandwich and some bottled ales. Aren't expandable tank bags

just a great invention?

IMG_5417.jpg

The road into the park.

IMG_5421.jpg

Late afternoon, I arrived at my destination, where I'd be sleeping for the next couple of nights.

I LOVE this place. Kodachrome! It was just me, and about 20 motorhomes and retirees.

But before I could relax, I had to set about erecting my shelter. Stay with me here.

(Three beers and a good deal of profanity.)

IMG_5585.jpg

IMG_5586.jpg

IMG_5587.jpg

IMG_5588.jpg

IMG_5589.jpg

Finally done, and ready for the evening. :D

IMG_5591copy.jpg

Some of the surrounding rock formations kinda creeped me out. (I SWEAR that's not Photoshopped.)

IMG_5608.jpg

I'll note here that sleeping in a tent - even with a Therm-a-rest and a warm, puffy sleeping bag -

is NOT restful to me anymore. I find myself waking up every hour or so, trying to get comfortable.

I had a motorcycle accident just over a year ago, and it seems that lots of stuff hurts

that didn't used to hurt ...when I lie on the ground. Maybe it's my imagination. Not complaining.

Just observing. I KNOW it's not because I'm getting old..... like most of you guys.

And so ended day THREE. (ouch. ooch.)

Tomorrow - the Grand Staircase and one of the most beautiful roads in America.

(I know I'm dragging this out, but I'm stuck at home today, and idle hands .....)

Who's custom painted silver/blue FJR is that in the pics? Me likey!
That belongs to Lord Stanley (beemerdons), the "Burrito Ballerina".

What on earth were you standing on way out there to get this shot?
Dr. Rich had happened by, and I was sitting on his head.

Looks like some skinny-assed forum member in drag -- Skooter maybe?
No Shiney. I understand from beemerdee that he prefers riding the tank, facing the rider.

Thanks everyone for all of the charitable comments so far.

The rest of this thing will go right downhill.

What's Niehart getting ready to do?

IMG_5436.jpg

All kidding aside, Great pictures only goes to show a great time. Don't ya just love riding across Hwy-50?

Alright then.

(Is it wrong to start drinking Negra Modelos before 10 on a Saturday?

I'm pretending I'm retired today. )

Where were we?

Day FOUR.

I crawled out of that stinking tent just as the sun was rising, grateful that I'd survived the night

of torture.

Instead of gearing up and hitting the road right away, I opted to put on my tennies, grab my

camera, and go hiking some of the nearby trails up and around the basin.

After a little huffing and puffing, I made it to the top of the bluffs and got some shots.

IMG_5637.jpg

IMG_5632.jpg

Me, making like Sir Edmund.

IMG_5622.jpg

Lovely in the morning.

IMG_5470.jpg

And because of the overwhelming response to my previous efforts, I captured a few of the

morning's moments on video for y'all.

They suck, but I don't know how to edit, so they're ....well, here ya go!

And ANOTHER, even lamer one.

(And sorry for overusing "reckon". Rut-prone.)

After my little hike, I skipped back to camp, prepared to do some more riding.

I noticed these little berries were all over the ground throughout the park. I figure

a fellow could survive out here for days, if he could gather enough of them for a meal.

IMG_5643.jpg

Okay. Off to see some more UT.

I first ran over to nearby Bryce NP, and took a few pictures.

Really stunning landscape, but it'd have been much better to come and view at sunset, when

the light would set the red rocks on fire. Gotta work on my timing.

IMG_5664.jpg

IMG_5655.jpg

IMG_5659.jpg

I had a fast breakfast at one of the places near the entrance to Bryce. Unremarkable, but over quickly,

(just like FJRONAMISSION's women describe him), and I turned back northeast to begin my ride up

Highway 12.

A quick stop here to select appropriate music for the road.

IMG_5666.jpg

Now, Highway 12, from about Henrieville, all the way to Torrey, is, IMO, just about one of the most enjoyable rides

an FJR pilot could take. Anywhere. It is just friggin' gorgeous, especially in very late September.

All the elements.

Great road surface.

Elevation changes.

Curves, both tight twisties, and roll-on sweepers.

Very light traffic.

And, at this time of the year, perfect temps (low 60's to low 70's), aspens putting on

a show, and the feel of the seasons changing.

All that, and just after leaving Henrieville, I'd pulled over to take my millionth photo ...

IMG_5672.jpg

... and guess who roars up on his Black Feej?

Al (feeger)!

IMG_5673.jpg

This dude's been on the road for a month, had attended EOM and SWFOG, and was on the final leg of his

grand adventure. Great company.

Off we went.

As we were gliding through Escalante, we spotted this amazing sight, and had to pull over!

IMG_5683.jpg

What a treat meeting Igor Brezovar! This guy is living everyone's dream. I can think of a few

forum members who'll salivate reading about him.

Check out his WEBSITE (clicky) for his story.

We chatted for a few minutes. He showed us his helmet, which he'd had painted with a map of our planet,

with a red line detailing his route around the globe.

And his rig! (He said he was saving up for an FJR.)

IMG_5680.jpg

As we were chatting, another character pulled up and introduced himself.

This is The Desert Doctor!

42 years of experience, repairing HD's and most other makes, machine shop, welding,

and parts. Only shop within 200 miles. 24 hour service. (435) 826-4951.

"Hell, people from all over the world come through here on a motorcycle. I've met 'em all."

IMG_5685.jpg

I love traveling on my bike.

Back in a minute, as Al and I continue up into even more beautiful country.

Damn Michael!! Quit that day job my friend ;) This is amazing stuff :good:

BTW Nice zoom shot, I'd only just gotten dressed..

:jester:
