overfilling the oil can cause the clutch plates to stick together by filling the cavity between the plates in the center and they hydro lock together. they won't open up and it's like shifting without opening the clutch plates. Hard shifting and clunking is the result. So there you have it!

Thanks for explaining that. I kinda figured the overfilled oil and hard shifting were related in someway. :)

When I did my clutch soak I noticed the crankcase was open so a part of the crank was visible. I thought hmmm, that oil level is so far down in the crancase compared to where the clutch is, How can it get any splash to the clutch? I would think you'd need at least 3 extra quarts to get it that high. My guess is that it had more to do with the gears getting some froth from the extra oil level.

I agree with making a friend of the Service Dept. if possible. I don't leave I watch them, they at first tried the "we do not allow customers in the service area due to insurance" I just said BS I was in Insurance for 10 years, and smiled and I said I would stay out of the way. Sure enough during a simple tire change of the front the Brake caliper was on the shop floor. I told the tech not a good idea as air could get into the brakes, although not likely and it is best to just loosely tighten it back and keep it up. He did and all was well, many of these guys are kids as young as my sons. Although not commonly done, I ask for a certain tech to work on my bike if they are good. They like it as it affirmation of their skill, and looks good to the boss. I also slip them a $5.00 tip if they do a good job.
