That's Twisted Cricket's '08. I ride an '05. BTW, after doing all the heat insulation gymnastics on the '05, I wasn't bothered by the engine heat. Just the good ol' sun's heat.

But I think when not moving I was showing five bars also. Of more interest (to me) is that for the first time ever the bike was hard-starting: not turning over right away, but sounding sluggish as it cranked. It finally caught every time. Thoughts?

I think all the "over heating" that you are experiencing is cooking your battery. Here in texas it happens all that time. Which is why I deep cycle my battery every two years to give it a fresh outlook on life.
