I test the abs on a hard packed dirt road -and ever since I read about the actuator piston rusting in it's bore from lack of use I usually exercise it on this dirt road, at least with the rear brake. Also good to keep fresh [moisture free] brake fluid in there.
+1 Good advice here! The ABS should be cycled at least once a month to keep the fluid moving around and the various parts moving. I use either a long flat straight where I can see any other vehicles (easy to do here in Texas) or the packed dirt road method. Checking the ABS on the front brake isn't that hard, just check the road surface closely (possibly get off and look) before you do it and pay attention to what you're doing. We should all be practicing this kind of stuff on a regular basis anyway.

FWIW, I have replaced the pump assy on another rider's bike. He scored a good used unit from an assertive rider on this list that had no doubt tested the ABS multiple times. So known good unit going into the bike. The process is not that difficult and just a matter of hydraulic lines and electrical connections and some bolts that hold the block in place.

In this case, it was Gen I to Gen I, so no idea if Gen II units are compatible. I suspect there is an additional line to the block on the Gen II, but do not know.

FWIW, I did test the unit after installation. Just like Iggy said, but I chose a nice flat hard gravel surface for my own comfort.
