Changed my '08 front tire today for the first time. As I was putting it back on I thought about the ABS sensor and how you're supposed to measure it after you get the wheel back on. Have any of you dealt with this? Is it easy to damage the ABS sensor or affect it so it won't work?

I'm not talking about the warning light coming on.

BTW I did search the forum and didn't find anything on this. Please let me know if I missed some

Thank you,

Doug

Be gentle with it and don't let it hit metal. Don't let metal hit the sensor ring on the tire either. The ABS seinsor is very expensive to replace, and it is fairly easy to FUBAR it.

What makes you think you're supposed to measure it after you get the wheel back on?

+1 to what Silent said. It's not really a big problem, just use a little common sense and care in handling of the sensor and rotor to avoid damage to either of them.

The wheel only goes on one way. At 109k I've had the wheels off a few times, (like maybe 30 or so), for 20 tire changes and fork work, etc. Still working just fine and never damaged anything.

I just pulled mine and wrapped it in a shop towel and duct tape as soon as I pulled it out.. Never gave any thought beyond that

Never heard of measuring it

Ask of my forum bud's and they will tell you I'm a complete doofus.

I've changed lots of tires on my 70K 06 and never done nothing to 'protect' the sensor.

Just sayin'..

I usually stick a zip lock bag over it. One of the smaller ones.

Never read anything about measuring it. Road Salt will corrode it up pretty quickly making it very difficult to get out.

Per others on the board I cleaned the base up with emery cloth and lubed with brake lubricant.

All is well thus far.

Have you ever heard the comment RTFM. I used to hear it a lot.

On page 4-24 of the 2008 FJR service manual, step 6 starts "Measure:...." But after reading your comments I went back and re-read the fine print. It says to measure only if you replace the bearings.

Thanks for all the comments.

According to the Yamaha marketing info the ABS sensors were changed on the '08 FJR. The removable sensor is not magnetic. Instead the serrated sensor ring mounted in the wheel is magnetic.

So maybe the handling of the removable sensor is not so critical for the '08 & '09.

If someone had a 2008 Service Manual there might be a discussion of the new sensors.
