Acceptable oil usage?

You could get some Sabaru upper cylinder cleaner to clean up the rings and valve seats.

Used it as part of my Subaru servicing, have some for the bike, going to do it soon.

I think in the USA, Seafoam is something similar, it's used to de-carbon the upper cylinder.
Another good one is put out by Yamaha called "Ring Free".

^ Just add to gas? Any thoughts on putting it into crankcase with oil - such as seafoam suggests. If I did that, I would wait until near the end of my oil's tenure.

Just to follow up, my bike used 500ml of oil over the last 2800 miles. A good deal of the riding had a LOT of high rpm fun and engine braking. Bike doesn't appear to be down on any power, did a roll-on with another Gen1 and they were similar so I suspect my compression is good. No blue smoke that I'm aware of. Oh well, still a great bike.

03 #275: doesn't burn a drop between oil changes.

I will ask the guys at CFO to give me a sniff as I smack it a few times.
how will hitting an electronic device fix it?

Back in the early days of home computers we used to fix some computers by giving them a good twist or a small drop (a couple of inches). You'd be surprised how effective that was.

Course, reseating socketed chips has the same affect.

Didn't work for my recently blow'ed up Samsung LCD TV though <*#^^%&^@#_)

I'm going to bring my bike into the local Yamaha dealerships around here to talk to them about examining it if it is a ticker and what goodwill Yamaha will give me as far as fixing it.

I will post a sound file later tonight after it uploads to YouTube. Bike burned about 500ml oil over the past 600 miles. It had dropped from the top to the bottom of oil sightglass each of the last two weekends of 600 miles each - measured in the same place start and finish in my driveway. Definitely burns more oil when it is run harder.

When I run ~1000 miles a day, my bike uses ~1 quart. If I'm running around town for a thousand miles, it doesn't use a drop. Was a ticker, fixed by dealer. I asked about the oil usage, which I think of as excessive, and was told Yamaha doesn't think it's excessive till it gets to 2 quarts/thousand miles. So, on the road I carry at least 1 quart, and check daily.

While I hate to be lumped in the same category as Scooter.....

Though, being of the same mind as Bounce does seem to balance that out....

92K + on my '05. I occasionally run it hard but don't abuse it. I can only remember adding oil one time about 6-8 months ago. Other than that, it just doesn't use any.

Thanks for the responses. Interesting the variability - but seems like the majority report almost no oil usage.

Here's a vid I took today. I have the rear wheel off the bike so it's stuck in the garage which is a bit noisey to pick up the ticking. I've heard worse, but the tick is there, and from only the left side. It rattles pretty good around 2krpm and briefly just above 3k. Only noticeable around town if I duck my head low and listen at low speeds, and it's definitely there.

Let me know what you think. I have an action plan as far as getting in touch with Yamaha (thanks Gramps and others) and will see if I get anywhere.

I did valve adjustment 6k miles ago and replaced the CCT for fun last week with the new model, didn't change any noises.

I am not the definitive expert but I sure as hell don't hear it. I also noticed you only had two bars on the temp gauge - the 'tick' is most prevalent when the engine is hot and especially after a long hard run.

My 226k bike was a noisy FJR. Several times Warchild declared it was a ticker. But when I took it to the FJRGoodies dealer - Desert Valley Motorsports to have it diagnosed at just over 100k miles, they said it was not a ticker. And remember, at this point they had done over 20 repairs to actual tickers so they knew what they were talking about. Tech told me the 'tell-tale' rpm is 3000-3200. If it is making a LOT of racket there, it is most likely a ticker. And when I say 'a LOT of racket', I mean definite kitchen knife banging on a pot noise. A lot of FJRs sound like they 'could' be tickers. When you have a ticker, it's pretty damn obvious.

And I just don't understand the oil comsumption. At 226,000 miles my FJR was using *ZERO* oil as far as I know. I NEVER added any betweetn oil changes and if anything I would get the mysterious 'rising oil in the sightglass' effect.

Thanks for the listen. It's more pronounced with the human ear but doesn't jump out at you like a knife on pan. It is the loudest 'ticking' on an FJR I have heard personally. I've had a ticker owner listen to it and he didn't think it sounded like one either. The oil usage is what has spooked me recently, only noticeable though after longer days of riding hard.

My bike rarely gets above 2 bars, sometimes 3 if sitting for a longer period of time. The 4th bar and fans coming on is an extremely rare occurrence on my bike, requires a lot of stop and go in hot weather.

That's gotta be frustrating. I believe my oil consumption has been similar to yours, only notice it after long days of running the engine. Did way more than 500 miles commuting and it did not drop noticeably. Then I did a 500 mile day and my low oil light was on the next day and the oil was the bottom of the sight glass - 3 times that has happened to me this summer, took about a half quart each time.
