Yep... used search. Windscreen motor doesn't return much more than standard windscreen discussions.

Anyway, when I raise/lower the windscreen I get this squeak/rubbing sound along the lines of what you'd get if you ran your hand across a nicely waxed fender or something like that.

I tightened down the screws on the windscreen already. That's not it. It's only when it moves up/down.

So, I'd like to get to it and check out what may be rubbing. Any advice on how to, or what to check?

My guess is that it is lack of lube on the two link arms found under panels B and C. A squirt of good penetrating lube on both edges of each of the two bushings should have you running silent again.

If it is the motor making the racket the problem may be more serious...

It's probably those arms...

...but what the hell are panel B and C? I don't have a service manual yet. Pics or something, please!

And would WD-40 be considered "good penetrating lube"?

wd 40 isn't really lube - it is a water displacement concoction.

I would use "super lube" or some other aerosol - if you can't get in there with some lithium grease. However - I'm saying that without having looked at the manual. It may specify yamalube super top secret unobtanium grease... in which case

'

you're screwed.

I like WD for lots of stuff - like spraying on tools or other outdoor used stuff - but nothing like good grease to keep things slippery.

Of course I have lithium grease! What moto dude doesn't? Pivot points, baby!

Anyway, I still need to know how to get to these SOBs without entirely field stripping my bike down to utter nekkedness. Any help on this would be appreciated.

Get some Pro Lube from the bicycle store. It's a parrafin based liquid that won't screw up plastic or rubber. No damaging solvent. It dries and leaves a fine coat of paraffin on the parts. Works great on cables, springs, linkages, the windscreen arms, and also the accessory box lid on the 06.

Edit: I know someone will ask ... No, it does not attract dirt.

The 06 panels are different.

I haven't gotten around to taking mine off yet.

There might be a how to on warchilds fjr tech site

Mine makes the same noise. I never thought about it enough to bother looking into it but I suspect it is the whindshield arms rubbing along the rubber strips that are on each side of the arm slots in the cowl. If it bothers you I would try putting something on the rubber strips that the arm moves along. Maybe some silicone spray or silicone grease on a Q tip. No disassembly required.
