Just got off the phone with my friendly neighborhood dealer. They dropped my headers. What did they find??? A lot of oil passin' the valve seals/guides, that's what they found. Next step, they call Yamaha. After lengthy discussion, the parts to fix my bike are on order. If the parts are stateside Gordon, the service manager expects them to be in hand by the end of next week. Also ordered? New head bolts.

I'm extremely excited about this finally taking place. Because of the knowledge that I have gained from this board I was able to safely navigate to the fix process.

Question: is there anything else that I need to be aware of? Got the head bolts ordered, so that is covered.

Smilin' Heidi :yahoo:

If you have the head bolts covered, that seems about the only thing that gets overlooked.

All the other items typically needed for a cylinder hear overhaul - head and valve cover gaskets, o-rings, etc, etc - seem to get ordered okay....

Thank ya' sir! If anyone should know, you should.

Is this thing going to be back in service by EOM????? I gotta new bike and I need to see if it will keep up with you!

hehehehe... cute, cute! I've been told that it'll be back in service w/ enough time for a shakedown ride b4 the meet. There's gonna' be a real problem if it's not. The meet is 1 month off.

Heidi,

One of the few things that mythed me, after they(the dealer) put the head on and said it was done, come to find out they did not do a TBS/Fine tune. I found this out when it was running rougher than expected and I called them.

They said according to the manual, this is a MAINTENANCE service and not part of the repair?! Frankly, I guess I was lucky they put the plugs back in(new ones). I brought it back and they did a TBS only with the Butterflys for free. I ended up doing the more thorough Un-Authorized version myself which really cleaned things up. This shop is a 5-Star Service shop multi-line.

So please remind them to do the TBS or it may be overlooked....

Stand by - your bike will run a LOT stronger once it's repaired.
My '05 sure did and still does 27k miles later.
Well, that is really something to look forward to. I already feel likes it's pretty quick... & I'm gonna' get more HP? Kewel! :good: :spiteful:

It's usually the head machining that takes the most time. It took 5 weeks for mine ( and others ) to get prepped. Follow up with the dealer and see what his plan is, maybe they do it in house like some ( rare ) shops ?

Hiyo... thanks for the advice. I'm planning on a TBS at EOM. I'll probably wait for that.

Highlander, no machine shop on premises. The shop manager already spoke w/ the machine shop. He told me that he informed them that this would be a "get it done as soon as it can be done" job.

Sooo, hoping that it's done sooner than later. I'm gonna' be pretty miffed if it's NOT finished. That's why I started the process 2 months in advance of EOM. I've spent almost a whole month getting blown off. Persistence prevailed.

Thanks for the advice guys

Bike is an '04... so, yes YES, although I have heard that there has been fixes done out of warranty.

I am assuming regular warranty refers to the first 12 months of ownership?

Bike has been ticking since about 9,000 miles. It has over 41,000 now. I haven't wanted to give it up long enough to have this done but figured that I'd have a better chance of fix while under YES warranty. (which is up sometime early next year)

It started very slight in younger days & it's pretty prevalent now... although a valve adjustment appeared to change the RPM's where you could here it the best.

I'm really jonesin' about not riding now. I haven't had my bike for almost 3 weeks... & I'm jonesin'.

Hey,

Good to here they are going to really fix it this time.

Is this the same dealer that gave it back to you still making noise a few weeks ago?

Just stay on their ass the whole time and be your charming friendly self. My bike took 4 1/2 weeks the first time and 6 weeks the second time.

Good luck, See ya at EOM !!!!!!!!!

Tim

Man, after seeing how loose (eroded) my valve guides were after only 5k miles yours must be really rattling.

Be sure to ask the repair tech to see the old guides and valves - should be interesting.

Yes, the same dealer. I dealt directly with the service manager this time. All previous items (that I told you about) have been fixed.

I was also promised that the same tech from my previous visit will never touch my bike again. Their engine guy is the one w/ his hands in there. I've been told that it's disassembled already... ready for the new goodies to go in.

I hope that my fix time is better than yours. A timeframe like yours would leave me bikeless for EOM. I'd still show up, mind you, but that would suck highly.

There fixed it for ya!

I think mine may be a ticker, about 11,000 miles, it's been getting progressively more noticeable. I'm going to see if it gets worse over the next 3-4000 miles and if it continues to become more noticeable, then I might take it to your dealer since they are away of the issue. I think W.V. is the closest I've heard of that acknowledged the issue.

Yamaha of Louisville probably isn't going to help me at all, but i will take it their first ask them if they have ever dealt with "excessive valve guide wear" on an FJR. I doubt it, they suck.

I don't have YES either so it will be interesting to see how it works out, if it truly is a ticker.

Heidi,

Show up bikeless !!!!!

I won't here of it!! You keep me posted. If your bike is not done by EOM, I'm sure Cheryl will ride her bike there and you can use it all you want. Or if your up to it. You fly here to L.I. and you ride my FJR to EOM and I'll ride my Buell, Cheryl will take her Ninja and we'll all have a blast on the WV twisties.

All the hard work you put into this event, you will be riding as far as I'll concerned.

Tim
