Add another tick fix to the pile

I hope that my fix time is better than yours. A timeframe like yours would leave me bikeless for EOM. I'd still show up ON A RENTED HARLEY, mind you, but that would suck highly.
There fixed it for ya!

I think mine may be a ticker, about 11,000 miles, it's been getting progressively more noticeable. I'm going to see if it gets worse over the next 3-4000 miles and if it continues to become more noticeable, then I might take it to your dealer since they are away of the issue. I think W.V. is the closest I've heard of that acknowledged the issue.

Yamaha of Louisville probably isn't going to help me at all, but i will take it their first ask them if they have ever dealt with "excessive valve guide wear" on an FJR. I doubt it, they suck.

I don't have YES either so it will be interesting to see how it works out, if it truly is a ticker.
Keith, you sooooo funny meester!!!

Oh BTW, I'm not located in WV. I'm in Norfolk VA. My dealer never heard of the premature valve guide wear. It took me a month to stop getting the runaround. But looks like I did it by knowing my particular bike well. (To the credit of FJRForum & the predecessor site) I am 98% positive that at first, because I am a woman, the original tech thought that I didn't know my way around my own bike. That might be true w/ some chickies... but not this one.

If your bike is a ticker you'll know it sooner or later for sure. It's a very distinct sound. Have you listened to slapnpop's sound byte? His bike is a severe ticker & yours may not sound that bad yet... but it'll give you a good idea what to listen for.

Once you start the process of trying to get it fixed, expect to pay for a valve adjustment beforehand. I've heard of some dealers making the deal... if the adjustment doesn't fix the valves then you won't have to pay. I paid for mine since I was overdue to have them checked/adjusted, anyway.

Heidi,

Show up bikeless !!!!!

I won't here of it!! You keep me posted. If your bike is not done by EOM, I'm sure Cheryl will ride her bike there and you can use it all you want. Or if your up to it. You fly here to L.I. and you ride my FJR to EOM and I'll ride my Buell, Cheryl will take her Ninja and we'll all have a blast on the WV twisties.

All the hard work you put into this event, you will be riding as far as I'll concerned.

Tim
Wow, you too good sir! I may just have to take you up on that if it really comes right down to it... & I'd ask that Cheryl bring her bike down. I'd love to scream that sucker around the WV hills. She's got a baby Ninja, right?

Yeah, I have listened to the sound bites. Mine is not nearly that bad, but at certain RPM levels, I definately notice something similar. I guess I'll be waiting a few more miles then, I'm not doing a valve adjustement at 15k.

I don't think anyone has mentioned any catstrophic effects from not fixing a ticker asap...

I'm hoping it's just some engine noise anyway, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't get any worse.

No problem.

She has been toying with the idea of riding it there anyway. If she does, I just may ride the Buell.

It is just so much fun in the tight stuff, and not too bad long distance. I've done a few 200+ mile days on it so far. Just by far not as comfy as the FJR.

Just have to play it by ear for now and see how she is feeling when the time comes. She hasn't done real long distance yet. But does have close to 10,000 miles on the bike so far.

Talk to ya soon,

Tim

Just got off of the phone w/ the shop manager at my dealer. My parts are in. Contrary to what I originally thought, my bike isn't already disassembled. He says that it'll be broken down today.

I asked him to hold onto the valves & seals after removed so I can get a picture or two for those that are curious what the valves will look like after a 42,000 mile tick fix. I'm not sure what the process is, but he said that there may not be a lot left of the guide once they remove them. Is it worth me taking the time to actually take any pictures?

Also, it sounds like he's thinking that I could possibly have my bike back next weekend & that it'll ultimately depend on the machine shop's schedule.

So, having my bike for EOM sounds like a good likelihood. I am thrilled!

Seems like a strange comment. Any decent machine shop would just put the head in an oven then pound out the guides. Does not damage them.

It just takes one of these.Valve guide tool

He told me that heating the head won't happen since it's aluminum. They pound them out or some such thing.

So, we already have pics of an advanced ticker. I think that I shall tell him to just pitch the old innards.

Just tell them to Get-It-Done. You have riding to do.
