To be sure I didn't cross the boundaries of which bike works for which application......I can be sure my new purchase isn't really going to edge out the FJR in duties like fire road or enduro riding. It may replace my work commute a little though.
I found a 2002 Honda XR650R for sale in NE Oregon and went and bought it today.
Some might know the XR series of bikes as 4-stroke Hondas. Maybe trail riders....I know I had an XR75 in the 70's. There's also the XR650L that's popular and comes all street legal like. However, it's steel frame and air-cooled engine is all about the 80's.
This sucker...the one with an R on the end is a dirtbike through and through with an aluminum frame, dry sump oil system and and oil in the frame, and liquid cooled. It's won a ton of Baja 1000 races....although it won't be doing anything like that with me onboard. Seems since the last time I road a dirtbike my *** crack become wider than modern dirtbike seats.
Regardless, this is an XR650R. Many are like it....few are street legal....and this one is mine!
It's been through less than 2 rear tires and on the original first...so it's low use.
Yeah, farkles are in the future. Probably a 4.3 gallon Clarke tank (this bike has some sun damage on the top plastic pieces), a TrailTech Vapor speedo computer (I figured out the company our board admin works makes slick units), and definitely some mirrors.
Fun?
Oh yeah, riding down the road it's about 55 hp uncorked and geared a bit low, but riding down a black top I found myself diverting off onto ditchbanks and farmer fields. I made some nice trenches and spewed flying dirt with the satisfying baritone growl of a 650cc thumper. "Stump pulling" was the phrase that kept coming to mind.
And I figure I have a 1/2 set of knobbies to wear out and decide if I stay enduro or think motard.
