To be sure I didn't cross the boundaries of which bike works for which application......I can be sure my new purchase isn't really going to edge out the FJR in duties like fire road or enduro riding. It may replace my work commute a little though.

I found a 2002 Honda XR650R for sale in NE Oregon and went and bought it today.

Some might know the XR series of bikes as 4-stroke Hondas. Maybe trail riders....I know I had an XR75 in the 70's. There's also the XR650L that's popular and comes all street legal like. However, it's steel frame and air-cooled engine is all about the 80's.

This sucker...the one with an R on the end is a dirtbike through and through with an aluminum frame, dry sump oil system and and oil in the frame, and liquid cooled. It's won a ton of Baja 1000 races....although it won't be doing anything like that with me onboard. Seems since the last time I road a dirtbike my *** crack become wider than modern dirtbike seats. ;)

Regardless, this is an XR650R. Many are like it....few are street legal....and this one is mine!

It's been through less than 2 rear tires and on the original first...so it's low use.

Yeah, farkles are in the future. Probably a 4.3 gallon Clarke tank (this bike has some sun damage on the top plastic pieces), a TrailTech Vapor speedo computer (I figured out the company our board admin works makes slick units), and definitely some mirrors.

Fun?

Oh yeah, riding down the road it's about 55 hp uncorked and geared a bit low, but riding down a black top I found myself diverting off onto ditchbanks and farmer fields. I made some nice trenches and spewed flying dirt with the satisfying baritone growl of a 650cc thumper. "Stump pulling" was the phrase that kept coming to mind.

And I figure I have a 1/2 set of knobbies to wear out and decide if I stay enduro or think motard. ;)

Too Cool! That'll look nice, next to the FJR. I'm guessing Extra-Enduro.

I've been eyeballing dual-sports recently; passing up too many gravel roads that need exploring.

Great.......Skooterg's the very first respondee. Just for the record...I told him and a couple of others I was looking. And, I don't normally share the contents of PM's, but I think this one was too funny and poignant to ignore...and am 99% sure Skooter would be fine with sharing.

I can't wait to try it!

Excuse me, but I'm a paramedic on the scene.
We found Mr. Watkins on the floor convulsing near his computer. We're thinking it started out as a laughing attack, but when we found spit on the monitor we're not so sure.

We're administering medical aid, but if you have any idea why he'd be this way, please let us know immediately.

Thank you.

Bob the Paramedic
Suffice it to say I'm going to try and not be in town when FlipperSkooter ever wants to visit......or install sliders the size of Schwinns. ;)

NICE JOB IGGSTER!!!!

xr650R 'plated' (street legal) ...and hardly used. That is an enviable find!!!! Good goin' !!!!

And you'll be keepin' those knobbies on that thing .....enjoying the great dirt you've got around your little corner of planet earth.

If bored ...connect with a few of these guys (clicky) many of them are just SW from you ...

Bryan (forum handle 'Vroom') is a good riding buddy of mine and he'd be a good DS guy to know up there.

Congrat's!!!!, some good fun in your future.

Way cool Iggie!

I've run street licensed XR's for years.

Here's my first hint for you: you can carry a spare cs sprocket and change it out quickly once you hit the trail. If done correctly, you won't even have to take a link out of the chain; just move the rear axle for correct tension.

But you already knew this, I bet!

Why is it in the back yard?? You don't have room to have any fun there. Good score.

Man. Love, LOVE, LOVE those things.

Hate you, though, Iggy. TWN would have said it best: BASTAGE.

Post up some roosting pics some time, eh? ('course, you'd need a friend for that....)

Cool,

I just picked up an XR400 that has a plate.

It's gone through more than a couple tires....

I've never had to replace both brake rotors on a DB before :dribble:

Price was right, even after replacing pretty much every wear item on the bike, and boy am I familiar with it now.

Won't run with a 650R in the desert, but it's a little easier to haul out of a northern Maine bog.

Had a 2002 XR650R uncorked with about 50 ponies. Not a good trail bike but a whole lot of wide open fun. Got to learn to start a thumper especially after it has been dropped. I used to go through a rear tire about every 8-10 rides. All that torque and power can eat them up in a hurry.

John's right. That critter is far better off-road than on. Keep 'er mud-ready.

Hey Iggie,

I DARE you to take that BRP in a whoop section at 50!

If you do, let me take fotos?

Seriously, enjoy it for what it is and for what is not...

like the FJR sings a siren song for the twisties, the XR too will sing a song of speed for the dirt..

Me thinks you already know the game.

On another thread ---

how about a SS1K on the BRP beast?

Don't they run those things for 1,000 miles down Baja, solo rider?

You can do it Iggie, GO Iggie, GO!

I'm rebuilding a 1962 R60 BMW for a SS1K attempt...

That's sick, twisted, wrong....and going to fester as a thought this week. :dribble:

looks like more than a thought.
Knowing that Matt is on his way back to SC for the IBR -you can imagine my surprise to see him out on back trails on the dirt bike.

.....Apparently he's taking the dirt bike back to SC and running the IBR on it!!!

Holy **** Matt!!, you're amazing.

Here(CLICKY) is where I saw matt today

...with a great pace heading east on the trails. Notice he didn't even change clothes -left straight from work.

I didn't know about this site. I am not really a DS rider yet, but joined for the future and to learn some things. Thanks.

Dual sports rock. Just about anywhere at anytime. Now when you are on the feej you will be wondering where all those dirt roads and trails head off too. We love our GS's.

Hmmm, fall is coming. Time to plan a trip.
