While I have my fairings off I would like to add an accessories plug for a phone charger. Has anyone added one to their bikes? I have the existing gear plug but it to small for my charger.

While you're waiting for the gang to get back from their rides and sit down at their computers, try googling this: accessory plug site:fjrforum.com

Enjoy!

Here's a pic of the one I put on the left side of my 05. I put another on the right, same place. I bought ;em at a local marina for 6 bucks or so. They're standard 12v. outlets, what we used to call cigarette lighter outlets. Needless to say, my choice was the cheap way out. They're still working fine 3 years later. The location has to be within about 1/4 inch from center... exaclty where I have them, or they won't fit. I also had to shorten one of the mirror studs a little... which almost became a problem later on when I removed the mirrors to put a bracket under each mirror to hang my Clearwater lights. Had I known that, I never would have shortened the mirror stud. With the brackets installed under each mirror, the studs don't protrude into the inner fairing area nearly as much.

I had a hard time finding a place to put them. I wanted them on the black panels... somewhere. However, they're rather large, and it's tricky to find a spot where they'll clear... underneath, where ya can't see. There 's a lot of stuff under those panels.

While you're at it, put one of these on there too...

Good luck.

Any questions, send me a PM.

Though the panel kit looks clean, I've got a friend at work who has lots of problems with it. By the time you add an adapter and plug in your accessory, it all hits the bars on a turn. Just not a good design, especially if your bars are set back. What worked well for me was to install two small RCA sockets that ground to the plate they are mounted on. I wired one adapter and my head set for the RCAs. It's clean, small, takes very little space and easy to use. One other idea, put a fuse bar in with a relay so it's only on when the key is on. All this is only about $20.

Here's two USB charging options, both from Amazon.

A flush-mount, dual USB charging port from Blue Sea, which removes the need for a cig-lighter adapter in USB charging applications:

And a hard-wired USB power outlet from NAPA, with lots of mounting and routing possibilities:

From the index page of the Forums section under the FJR Discussions is an area called External Tech Links each of the sites in that area are well indexed and, in most cases, have detailed articles on how to add power ports.

Also, using the search as listed earlier will find threads within the forum that discuss it. These reminders are provided because commonly asked topics originally get very detailed answers. But, over time, those people taking great pains to answer get worn down and get more "concise" in their replies. Someone coming in late to the game often doesn't get the enthusiastic, detailed instructions that the first requester might have. By finding those original articles, you get the benefit of earlier enthusiasms.

Just for the record, I have NO PROBLEMS at all with my powerlet on the left side dash. Never hits anything, never fails, I use it to charge my bike in the offseason, and power my tank bag while riding.

I have the right angle BWM style plug so it is fairly low profile (less then 2 inches off the panel).

My suggestion to anyone who is hitting their bars would be to probably invest in the right angle powerlet plug.

One can also use panel mount coax plugs from Radio Shack.... I believe it is size M, same as for some heated gear. I have 2 of them in a small project box mounted on the underside of the dash shelf.
